Medical examiner: Child died from abdominal trauma

By: Todd South

A 3-year-old child whose death is under police investigation likely died from “bowel perforation due to blunt force abdominal trauma,” according to the Hamilton County medical examiner.

The child, a black male who weighed 32 lbs., was brought to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital at 5 a.m. Saturday.

The boy was brought to the hospital by his father’s girlfriend on a complaint that he was having difficulty breathing, said Sgt. Jerri Weary, a Chattanooga Police Department spokeswoman. The medical staff found signs of abuse and determined he was dead, Sgt. Weary said.

The medical examiner found more than 30 bruises on the child’s body.
