Dad charged with beating 23-month-old daughter because he was stressed over upcoming trial (Morganton, North Carolina)

People, please. Let's try to get this straight once and for all. A "spanking" is a tap on the behind. When Daddy "spanks" a child over the course of a week, leaving bruises all over her body (face, arms, legs, back, and throat), brain injuries, and a child who is unable to keep food down, we do NOT have a "spanking." We have a beating, an assault. So what happened? Did this child cry or do something to "frustrate" dad? No. This @$$wipe was "stressed" because he was going to trial soon for felony breaking and entry, and larceny. FELONS like CODY GARRETT CHADWELL do not make good caretakers! They need to be kept away from babies and young children especially! No custody, no visitation. Out of the picture!

Morganton - A Burke County father is in jail without bond, accused of abusing his 23-month-old girl.

The toddler is at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with brain injuries, said Burke County Sheriff's Office Lt. Becky Weatherman.

Deputies charged Cody Garrett Chadwell, 23, of 4734 Homestead Way, Morganton on Sunday with felony intentional child abuse-serious physical injury.

Deputies accuse him of beating the toddler over the course of a week.

Chadwell had his first appearance in court on Monday, and Judge Burford Cherry assigned Tim Rooks as his court-appointed attorney. The judge didn't address Chadwell's bond, according to court officials, and he remains at the Burke County Jail without bond.

A deputy and a worker with the Burke County Department of Social Services went to Chadwell's residence Saturday to investigate a report of suspected child abuse, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

The toddler's mother, Alecia Danielle Nanney, was there with the toddler and the release says the officer and social worker saw bruises on the toddler's face, arms, legs, back and throat.

They told Nanney to take the toddler to Grace Hospital to be examined, the release says. The social worker went to the hospital with the mother and detectives were called in to investigate.

Detectives suspect Chadwell had been spanking the toddler since May 2, the press release says.

It also says the father admitted to spanking the toddler too hard because he was stressed about pending court cases.

The mother told detectives she didn't spank the toddler but was aware of the father spanking the toddler, the release says.

The toddler was transported to Carolinas Medical Center due to its injuries and a bleeding on the brain, according to detectives.

Weatherman said on Monday the toddler hasn't been able to keep down food.
The case is still under investigation.

According to court records, Chadwell was under intensive probation for a felony probation violation. Chadwell pleaded guilty to an earlier 2008 felony offense.

Chadwell has a pending trial date on May 24 for felony breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering, according to court records.
