A Reno man was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of child abuse and simple battery after allegedly striking his son with his belt on the way to school.

Police said Shawn Newman was escorting his juvenile son to school and became angry with him.

Newman allegedly struck his son several times with his belt about 7:10 a.m. in the 1800 block of Kings Row.

When a resident tried to intervene, Newman allegedly attacked the resident with the belt.

The resident defended himself, and other people intervened to separate the two men until police arrived.
