District Court judge sets bond for young dad accused of breaking baby's leg

The 25-year-old father charged with breaking his infant daughter’s right leg last week remains in jail after a Tuesday bond hearing.

William Joseph Huber III of 114 Archdale Drive, Bessemer City, received a $50,000 secured bond in a hearing before Gaston County District Court Judge Richard B. Abernethy. Huber’s bond is the same amount set by Magistrate J.B. Brantley after his arrest on Sept. 4.

Huber broke 4-month-old Starla’s leg on July 22, according to an arrest warrant and affidavit.

“He lied numerous times about what caused the injury,” Gaston County Police Detective C.F. McAulay wrote in the affidavit. “None of his accounts can explain the spiral fracture on his daughter’s leg.”

Starla has had two other unexplained fractures to her legs, the affidavit states.

Huber faces a charge of intentional child abuse causing serious physical injury.
