Dad BENITO ACOSTA viciously beat his two children and wife to death with a shovel, then hit them with rocks. Relatives say he was mentally ill.

A deranged father brutally killed his two children and his mother inside their home in Asingan town, Pangasinan province on Thursday afternoon.

Police said that according to neighbors, they saw 50-year-old Benito Acosta rush into their home and attacked his 5-year-old son, Jesus and 3-year-old daughter, Anabelle with a shovel.

Police said Acosta also attacked his mother, Marcelina.

Investigators added that Acosta also hit the three victims with rocks. The victims died of severe injuries in the head and different parts of their bodies.

Acosta tried to commit suicide after killing the children and the old woman, but was prevented and arrested by responding policemen.

Asingan police chief Domingo Eden said they were informed by the suspect's relatives that he is a mentally-ill.

Eden, however, said they will still file a case of multiple parricide against the suspect.
