A MANSFIELD man who repeatedly punched and kicked his wife as she held their young child has been slapped with a two-year supervision order.

Jetmir Gjeta (24), of Newark Close, admitted assaulting his partner on 6th April when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates' Court last Wednesday.

The court was told Gjeta returned to the family home and woke his wife by slapping her in the face and pulling her hair.

Gjeta continued to hit her in the face and arms and threatened to break her mobile phone with a kitchen knife and rip her clothes up.

He then taunted her with the house phone and told her to call the police, but pulled the phone away from her before throwing a plastic baby walker at her.

The court was told Gjeta forced her against a wall and his wife's screams alerted a neighbour who knocked on the front door and called police.

In a police interview, he admitted the assault on his partner who was left with a cut to her left cheek and grazing to her arms and legs.

In mitigation, Paul Bilton said Gjeta had experienced a troubled upbringing in Kosovo and wanted to move forward from this type of behaviour.

"He is ashamed but he has been backed by his own family and his foster family and does not want to return to court in any way, shape or form," he said.

District Judge Mervyn Harris described the fight as a nasty incident resulting in serious injuries, but acknowledged Gjeta's early guilty plea.

He ordered that Gjeta attend the Integrated Domestic Abuse (IDA) programme and pay £500 compensation to the victim.
