Father admits to hurting 2-month-old daughter

Bixby, Okla. —
A Bixby father was arrested Monday night, after being accused of child abuse.
Police say Nathan Putnam was watching his 2-month-old daughter, while the mother and grandmother went to the store.
During this time, the infant began to cry. This bothered Putnam, so he admitted to grabbing the girl's foot and pulling it in a downward position.
A short time later, the mother and grandmother returned home and noticed bruising on the infant's foot.
Putnam described the girl's injury as, "popped blood vessels at the base of the ankle."
A doctor checked out the infant and determined the injury to be consistent with child abuse.

A BRISBANE father who had sex with his young daughter “every second day” for almost three years will spend 13 years behind bars.
The 39-year-old from Deception Bay, north of Brisbane, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court to maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with his biological daughter from shortly after her fourth birthday in October, 2011 until she turned six in January.
He also pleaded guilty to raping her twice in his bedroom on January 23 this year.
Judge Michael Burnett jailed the man for 13 years, adding the girl would suffer the emotional trauma of her father’s abuse for her whole life.
“The conduct is grossly criminal. It is offensive. It is, frankly, in regard to the relationship between yourself and your daughter, simply against the order of decent human behaviour,” he said.
Judge Burnett said the little girl, now aged seven, lived with a foster family but continued to wake through the night in a sweat, cry out or whimper and experienced nightmares.
The father, who sat alone in the prisoner’s dock wearing an oversized blue polo shirt and with his head bowed down at the floor, sobbed throughout the sentence, dabbed at his eyes and blew his nose.
At one point he stood and cried out: “I just want to say sorry to my daughter.”
The court was told the father initially denied having sex with his daughter until after his arrest when he wrote a letter from jail to the Department of Child Safety apologising for his treatment of the girl and admitting to his crime.
The man was jailed for two years, suspended after nine-months, after being convicted of indecently dealing with his 15-year-old step-daughter in the Maryborough District Court in 1998.
Crown prosecutor Dejana Kovac said the child told her mother that she had been sexually abused in January this year.
The father, who separated from the woman months earlier following a violent relationship, had three children with her.
Ms Kovac said the girl’s parents fought about the child’s claim of sexual abuse and it became so heated the woman locked herself in the bathroom and called police.
She said the father bundled all three children into his car and drove them to his mother’s house on the Darling Downs.
Ms Kovac said the man agreed to the daughter taking part in a welfare check with police and he returned with the children to Brisbane on January 23.
Police arrived at the home in Deception Bay on January 25 to interview the little girl in regards to the sexual abuse claim she made against her father.
Ms Kovac said the child told police her father raped her twice in his bedroom on the day they returned home, two days earlier.
She told police her father showered with her afterwards.
The girl told police her father had sex with her regularly following her fourth birthday, probably “thousands” of times in total and took her into his bedroom “whenever he felt like it”.
She told police her father didn’t want her to get him in trouble because “he’ll get angry at me”.
The man was arrested by police but denied any sexual relationship with his daughter.
It wasn’t until he sent a letter to his daughter through the Department of Child Safety that he indicated his guilt.
Barrister Kim Bryson, for the father, said her client had a difficult and largely itinerant childhood where he experienced violence and abuse.
She said the offending against the man’s daughter took place following the death of his father and in the context of alcohol and drug abuse.
Ms Bryson said the man was previously prescribed anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medication but was not compliant with his medication at the time of the offending.
She said he wrote an apology to his children in which he demonstrated remorse, insight and empathy for his victim.
Judge Burnett took into account 316 days served in pre-sentence custody.

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A fight between a husband and wife sparked a violent chain of events that landed a car inside a house and a husband and father behind bars.
The man and woman were apparently fighting over custody of their child and it led to dangerous and violent consequences.
"Kept hearing some noise and I said what is that going on," said Jerry Reis, neighbor.
Police say the noise Reis and other neighbors on Schumaker Drive in Shelby County heard was Justin Cottrell slamming into cars as he was leaving home on Monday evening.
"There was three vehicles that were actually damaged from the tirade that he went on when he was leaving the house," said Officer Todd Rankin, with Simpsonville Police.
"It wasn't over," said Reis.
Police say Cottrell eventually led Kentucky State Police on a high speed chase.
Officer Rankin said, "At a hundred plus miles an hour, my understanding."
Officer Rankin was first on the scene and says he was there when Cottrell called the home.
"And on that phone call he basically said: 'I'm going to drive through the living room of the house'. In not so nice words," explained Rankin.
Rankin says a short time later, Cottrell returned with his foot on the gas pedal.
"He then went around my cruiser and went through the grass and between the stop sign and mailbox and went airborne into the house."
Police suspect this started after a fight between Cottrell and his wife over custody of the couple's 4-year old son.
"Apparently they wanted him to leave because of his previous actions and threats that he had made," said Rankin.
"Mr. Cottrell, you're going to need an attorney, do you have an attorney?," a Shelby County judge asked during Cottrell's arraignment Tuesday.
"No, I'll need one," he replied.
Cottrell was appointed a public defender. He is facing several charges including 4 counts of attempted murder because his family and the officer were all at the home.
Rankin said, "His wife and son were in the bathroom, ah, right off of the front bedroom, his mother in-law was actually in the utility room."
Meanwhile, Jerry Reis doesn't know Cottrell well, but doesn't want him back in the neighborhood.
"Anybody who would take the chance to hurt their family like that, yeah, he doesn't need to be back here," said Reis.
Right now, Justin Cottrell is being held on a $100,000 bond.
He is scheduled to return to court on Thursday of next week.

An East Tennessee couple has been sentenced to 35 years in prison each for their role in the death of a 5-year-old girl forced to drink so much grape soda it caused her brain to swell.
Randall Lee Vaughn, 41, and Mary Lavonne Vaughn, 58, of Surgoinsville were sentenced Monday in Hawkins County Criminal Court. #Randall is the girl's biological father.
The Tennessean reports that the couple entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and aggravated child neglect.
Alexa Linboom was suffering from extreme brain damage when she was brought to an emergency room on January 1, 2012, by her father, Randall Vaughn and her stepmother, Mary.
An investigation found the young girl had been forced to drink the water and soda in one to two hours as punishment after taking one of her stepmother's drinks.
The huge intake of fluid caused her brain to swell and herniate, which led to her death on January 3, 2012.
Attorney-general Berkeley Bell told the Times News that after allegedly forcing their child to drink an excessive amount of fluid, they failed to seek immediate medical help.
'Our position is it was a matter of several hours after the child started exhibiting serious symptoms, after the child was screaming out in pain, went into a paralyzed state, and became unconscious [that they sought help,' Bell said.
After a two-year investiagtion it was found that Alexa was killed by acute fluid intoxication , which caused hyponatremic encephalopathy.
Bell said there was no history of abuse on record at the Vaughan family home, but added: 'They did employ some alternative forms of punishment.'
'Allegedly the child, as a form of punishment, was forced to drink grape drinks, as well as a great deal of water, to the point that her body became water intoxicated,' Bell said. 'That led to her brain swelling and all of her systems shutting down, and to her eventual brain death.' .

GREENSBURG, Pa. —A Westmoreland County man will spend 20 to 40 years in prison for killing his 2-month-old daughter.
Matthew Milisits, 32, previously pleaded guilty to third-degree murder for the November 2012 shaking death of Sophia Ludwiczak.
On Monday, Judge Rita Hathaway sentenced Milisits to the maximum sentence allowed, and said she would have sentenced him to longer time in prison if the law had let her.
"That made me even happier because it showed me that she realizes what the truth really was in the situation," said Sophia's mother, Samantha Ludwiczak. "I'm very glad Sophia got the justice she deserves."
Milisits was watching the baby by himself at his Vandergrift home when he said he became upset she was crying. After a new diaper and a bottle didn't stop the crying, Milisits told the court he shook the girl. Doctors found Sophia suffered severe injuries including brain swelling, a detached retina and rib bruising. Sophia did five days later at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Ludwiczak discovered the injuries after Milisits drove the baby back to Ludwiczak. She called for help after realizing her daughter was seriously injured.
Five character witnesses testified on Milisits' behalf, including his father, his pastor and three neighbors -- one of whom is a retired state police commander. All five spoke of Milisits' compassionate, caring nature and his wonderful parenting skills to his son from a previous relationship, Ashton, now 8.
But Ludwiczak told the court of a different side of Milisits, including his initial text message to her upon learning she was pregnant where he said, "I have reached my one child limit. My son will never have a sibling."
Milisits said in court Monday he sent that text message because he was shocked to learn he would be a parent again. Defense attorney Phil DiLucente told the court Milisits has completed Bible study classes while incarcerated and spends a lot of time praying and asking God for forgiveness.
When Pittsburgh's Action News 4 Reporter Ashlie Hardway asked Milisits if he had anything he would like to say about his sentence, he replied, "Yeah, get that camera out of my face." When asked why, Milisits said, " Because I don't (expletive) like you guys."
Ludwiczak said she now has peace and can focus completely on raising her two other children. She said she would also like to start a charity walk to raise awareness for shaken baby syndrome.
DiLucente said he is unsure if he will file an appeal. Milisits will get credit for time served.
Milisits' family had no comment.

A medical report showed the child died as a result of torture all over his body around two years ago.
The defendants told the court the child tripped and fell several times and tried to hang himself with a piece of cloth to imitate some cartoons he had seen on television.
They said they had to tie him up every night on the recommendation of a well-known sheikh because the child kept opening their apartment door to strangers at night.
Omar Jabawi and Rola Abu Shalhoob were arrested over two years ago in Riyadh following the medical report that put the causes of the child's death to bruises and contusions in the neck, face, chest, left shoulder, thighs, knees and left cheek.
The doctor said some of the injuries the child sustained were a few days old while some were older.
The main causes of his death were severe head traumas and contusions. Another report by the hospital proved the child sustained all these injuries because of torture.
Neighbors testified before the court that they heard the child crying many nights every night after 10 p.m.
The judge did not hand down a death sentence because there were insufficient conditions for such a verdict.
The child's biological mother, who was divorced and is Syrian, said her child moved in with his father seven months before his death and that she only saw him twice although she did not have a custody child certificate. "My ex-husband and his second wife tortured my child and didn't let me see him," she said.
Fahd Al-Rokban, who taught the child at elementary school, said Abdullah's performance deteriorated after he moved with his father.
When asked why the school failed to spot the torture marks on Abdullah's body, he said most student counselors at schools are engaged in administrative work and do not perform any counseling duties.

They said they had to tie him up every night on the recommendation of a well-known sheikh because the child kept opening their apartment door to strangers at night.
Omar Jabawi and Rola Abu Shalhoob were arrested over two years ago in Riyadh following the medical report that put the causes of the child's death to bruises and contusions in the neck, face, chest, left shoulder, thighs, knees and left cheek.
The doctor said some of the injuries the child sustained were a few days old while some were older.
The main causes of his death were severe head traumas and contusions. Another report by the hospital proved the child sustained all these injuries because of torture.
Neighbors testified before the court that they heard the child crying many nights every night after 10 p.m.
The judge did not hand down a death sentence because there were insufficient conditions for such a verdict.
The child's biological mother, who was divorced and is Syrian, said her child moved in with his father seven months before his death and that she only saw him twice although she did not have a custody child certificate. "My ex-husband and his second wife tortured my child and didn't let me see him," she said.
Fahd Al-Rokban, who taught the child at elementary school, said Abdullah's performance deteriorated after he moved with his father.
When asked why the school failed to spot the torture marks on Abdullah's body, he said most student counselors at schools are engaged in administrative work and do not perform any counseling duties.

Deputies: Easley 4-year-old boy shot by father

EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) - Pickens County deputies said a car crash led to the discovery that a 4-year-old boy was shot by his father in Easley on Monday night.
Chief Deputy Creed Hashe said a couple got into a verbal fight at their Lacy Lane home that turned violent when 21-year-old Travis Blake Carlton fired several shots from a semiautomatic handgun.
Hashe said the couple's son was sitting inside a car when shots were fired directly into the passenger side of the vehicle, hitting the boy in the chest.
At about 7:43 p.m., the Pickens County Sheriff's Office received several calls about a wreck on Saluda Dam Road.
When deputies arrived to help South Carolina Highway Patrol at the crash scene, they said they found one of the cars involved in the crash was driven by the woman taking her son to the hospital. Deputies said the crash happened about a mile from where the shooting took place, and no shots were fired at the crash scene.
When deputies responded to the couple's home, they said Carlton was located and taken into custody. Deputies said they also found a .40 caliber gun at the home.
The mother and her son were taken to the hospital for the boy's gunshot wound and injuries she received in the wreck, deputies said. Hashe said she was not shot and both are expected to survive their injuries.
Carlton is being held in the Pickens County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility until he appears before a Pickens County judge. Deputies said Carlton is expected to be arraigned on two counts of attempted murder Tuesday afternoon.
Online jail records show Carlton was also charged with abuse to inflict great bodily injury upon a child, two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature in addition to the two attempted murder charges.
FOX Carolina spoke with neighbor Vickie Long on Tuesday who said she heard the shots fired Monday night.
Long said the couple has lived in the home for about six months. She said she has heard gunshots on several occasions, often late at night or early in the morning.
"Last night we heard several gunshots during the day, and then when it got dark last night, right as it was getting dark we heard about four rounds go off and then quit," Long said. "And then we heard a car take off real fast. I thought somebody was running from him or something, the way he shoots all the time.”
Long said she did not see anything until after deputies arrived, afraid to go outside when they heard the shots.
