GCSO: Newborn suffers brain hemorrhage; Father charged

Kyle Weiss accused of shaking baby

MAULDIN, S.C. —A 25-year-old Mauldin man is facing charges after he shook his newborn daughter and caused brain damage, according to the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to Greenville Memorial Hospital on Oct. 5, where the 7-week-old baby was being treated in the pediatric intensive care unit. The baby was unresponsive and had suffered bleeding on the brain and hemorrhaging of her eyes, injuries doctors say were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Investigators said they learned that the baby was in the custody of her father, Kyle Patrick Weiss, the day before the infant was admitted to the hospital.

Deputies said Weiss did not cooperate with the investigation, and indicated the baby had been injured in a fall and then would not wake up.

Weiss was charged with child abuse with great bodily harm. He was released from the Greenville County Detention Center after posting a $20,000 bond.
