Father of Ridgecrest baby found not breathing arrested in connection with child's death

The father of a baby who died from blunt force head trauma earlier this month was arrested Thursday in connection with the infant's death, Ridgecrest Police Sgt. Justin Dampier said Thursday night.

Kylor Smith-Sims, 21, was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. on suspicion of homicide and physical abuse of a child, Dampier said.

Police initially responded to the 500 block of West Atkins Avenue on March 6 to investigate a report of an infant not breathing, a department news release said.

Travion Gabriel Smith-Sims, 10 weeks old, was taken to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, the news release said, where it was discovered that he had several significant injuries.

Travion was then flown to Loma Linda Medical University Hospital where he was pronounced dead March 11, a coroner's office news release said.

An autopsy March 14 determined the baby's death was a homicide, according to the coroner's office.

Dampier said both Smith-Sims and Travion's mother have cooperated with the investigation.

Smith-Sims was arrested without incident after he met with investigators for another interview, Dampier said.

Dampier said Smith-Sims and Travion's mother lived together, but he could not say whether they were married, or whether they had other children.
