Dad shoots and kills 17-year-old son over missing video game; standoff with SWAT team follows (Houston, Texas)

Dad OFELIO ANTONIO OTERO got all hot and bothered over a "lost" video game, so he shot his 17-year-old son even as he was trying to run away. The boy died at the scene. Then Dad decided to go for extra drama by getting into a standoff with the local SWAT team. A little out of control are we? Do you suspect that Dad probably has a history of abuse and volatility? I do.

Dad accused of shooting son

Police have accused Ofelio Antonio Otero, 40, of shooting and killing his 17-year-old son during an argument over a video game at a southwest Houston apartment.

Otero surrendered Sunday to police after a standoff with SWAT officers, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Otero had been drinking heavily and argued with his wife and son about a missing video game about 4:15 a.m., Houston Police Department spokeswoman Jodi Silva said. During the argument, Otero loaded his gun, authorities said.

As Ignacio A. Otero ran away, the father allegedly fired one shot that hit the teen in the neck, before fleeing the apartment on foot, police said. The boy died at the scene.

Otero, who is facing a murder charge, has a prior DWI conviction.
