A man has been arrested for child abuse after police say he shook his 2-month-old baby so hard, the infant suffered severe head injury.
Brendon P. Smith, 26, of the 600 block of Ross St. in Dover is being held at Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna after failing to post $305,000 bail, Dover police said.
On Tuesday, city detectives were called to Bayhealth Kent General in Dover for a child abuse investigation, said Lt. David E. Spicer, commander of the Criminal Investigation Unit.
Detectives determined Smith had shaken the baby several times, causing "severe head injury," including multiple brain hemorrhages, Spicer said.
The baby immediately was flown to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Rockland, he said.
The child's condition was not disclosed.
Smith was charged with three counts of first-degree child abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
