DASTARDLY DADS FROM THE ARCHIVES (Harrow, England - 1905)

Account is from Martin Fido and David Southwell, True Crime: The Infamous Villains of Modern History and their Hideous Crimes (2008).

Wife Murderer Hides Bodies in Trunk (1905)

Chemist's Assistant ARTHUR DEVEREUX found that even if two can live as cheaply as one, three cannot ... and five certainly cannot! Life as a married man with three children entailed serious financial hardship. In January, he bought a large trunk and some morphine and choroform.

Somehow he persuaded his wife and their twin children to drink the poison. Then he sealed his three victims into the trunk with an airtight mixture of glue and boracic acid, and deposited them at a warehouse in Harrow, England, before moving to Coventry with his surviving son. Mrs. Devereux's mother successfully traced her son-in-law's movements and tracked down the bodies to the warehouse. Police apprehended Devereux, who has been hanged and convicted.
