Infant Dies In Wreck, Father Charged

STEVENSON, AL - The father of a five-month-old boy is charged in connection with the infant's death. The infant died Monday night in a wreck in Jackson County.

The three-car wreck happened around 6:00pm at the intersection of Alabama Highway 117 and Burch Street.

Police say Sammy Joe Batey, 27 was driving a car in which his girlfriend, Megan Hutchins, and their five-month-old son were passengers.

Batey lost control of the vehicle and wrecked.

According to the Jackson County District Attorney's office, Batey ran away from the wreck on foot, while his girlfriend and son had to be taken to the hospital. The boy later died.

Right now, Batey is charged with leaving the scene of an accident. However, more charges could be coming.
