Daughter 'hurt so much' by father's sexual abuse

A 38-year-old father who admitted sexually abusing his daughter over a five-year period, starting when she was eight years old, cried in the prisoner's box on Monday as his estranged daughter read a scathing victim impact statement.
"What he did to me, how he used me, I'll never forget," said the now 14-year-old.
"I hurt so much and I'm so damaged that I can't mention his name again. But you know what, you'll never rent space in my head ever again. I'll try to forgive you, but I'll never forget."
Provincial court Judge Harry Van Harten will give the sentence today.
According to an admitted statement of facts entered as an exhibit on Monday, the man began sexually assaulting the girl in April 2004. It started as touching and progressed until April 2009, when he stopped.
He would also take pictures of her naked and engaging in various sexual acts with him, but later deleted them, said the document.
In seeking an eight-year prison sentence, Crown prosecutor Nadine Nesbitt said it was especially aggravating that the offender was in position of trust, and that there were numerous assaults over a lengthy period.
"(The girl) told police that her father told she was beautiful and special and that her siblings would sometimes get jealous because she received more attention than they did from her father, and she received special perks like staying up late," said Nesbitt, reading from the admitted facts.
The facts state the girl said her father told her not to tell anyone about the sexual abuse and she did not because she did not want to "break his trust."
It wasn't until January 2010 that the girl told her mother about the sexual abuse and police were called.
The man cannot be named to protect the girl's identity.
Nesbitt also sought to have the father declared a sex offender and not attend, for life, any park, school, playground, swimming pool, etc., where children might be present.
Defence lawyer Tonii Roulston, who argued for a five-to six-year sentence, said her client has admitted he has a problem and needs sexual offender treatment. She said he should get a lesser sentence than suggested by the Crown.
The father pleaded guilty to one count each of sexual touching of a child under 14, and making, possessing and distributing child pornography.

Dad punches 7-month-old daughter during visitation; blames the hot weather (Houston, Texas)
We know this assault took place during visitation, because it's mentioned that dad ADAM COFFMAN didn't like Mom's new boyfriend AND that he was taking care of the baby. Daddy was also very annoyed by the hot weather and all that crying. It so sucks to be Daddy! So he punched a helpless infant twice, causing extensive head trauma.

Doctors also found the child was not being adequately fed. They noted the injuries were consistent with physical abuse.
Though the child will survive, she suffers from major complications including several strokes and a possible loss of vision. She will most likely have special needs as a result of her injuries.
Coffman told investigators he was with his child at their home in the 7500 block of Cook Road on May 27, according to court documents. The child was on her back crying and Coffman was trying to get her to stop.
He attempted to give his daughter a pacifier, but she spat it out. He then punched her in the side of her head and she rolled on her stomach. As the baby continued to cry, he struck her again, put the pacifier in her mouth and left the room.
When asked why he hit the child, he listed the following reasons:
-- It was hot
-- The child would not stop crying
-- He dislikes moving (At the time of the incident, Coffman was moving to another residence)
-- His daughter would not stop crying and he was mad at the mother’s boyfriend
Later in the day, Coffman noticed the child had a large bruise on her head and she had vomited. He said he did not immediately seek medical attention because he knew police would be in his life after that.
Coffman is charged with injury to a child and is in custody on $50,000 bond.

But Martin Romero refused to believe it.
He had just listened to a week of testimony from medical experts and his 17-year-old daughter describing years of sexual abuse that started when she was 4 years old.
The physical evidence was overwhelming. The girl had internal injuries consistent with sexual abuse over a long period of time.
She told investigators that her father would rationalize the abuse by saying, "All fathers have sex with their daughters." She said he believed that since she was his daughter, he could do what he wanted.
The victim's family told her she was lying. Experts said she wasn't. Her father was sent to prison in October 1999 for 35-1/2 years.
A little more than four years later, the victim killed herself. She left a suicide note, asking God for forgiveness. Her father is still trying to appeal his conviction.
The Romero case is one of several child abuse examiner Dr. Janey Purvis has seen end in suicide in her 16 years working in the Klamath Falls area.
And even if victims don't commit suicide, the abuse has lasting impacts, she said.
“Most of these kids slowly kill themselves with drugs and alcohol,” Purvis said.
The mind of abusers can transform heinous physical and sexual abuse into common practices and grown men convince themselves the repeated rape of a child is acceptable, even appropriate, experts say.
And, experts say, Martin Romero’s repeated attempts to appeal his conviction — despite the physical evidence and a unanimous jury verdict — shows how deeply the denial can run in the mind of an abuser.
In Klamath County, there were 32 confirmed cases of child sex abuse last year.
Law enforcement and child welfare advocates investigated 169 cases — roughly one every other day.
Overall, two of every 100 children in the county were physically abused, sexually abused or neglected in 2010 — a rate that exceeds Oregon’s average by 50 percent.
“All of these cases are bad,” Purvis said. “But I’ve seen a few that have been horrific.”
The mental torture experienced by an abuse victim is a sharp contrast to the psychological factors present in an abuser.
Victims feel guilt or shame, but abusers rationalize their behavior, denying that their actions are wrong, experts say.
No one common trait
There’s no one common trait that can help local law enforcement and child welfare advocates pick out an abuser.
But, authorities say, those caught committing abuse fall into several categories: They’re typically males. They are usually relatives or friends of the family whose child they abuse. And, more often than not, the abusers convince themselves there’s nothing wrong with what they’re doing.
“A lot of sex abusers have errors of thinking,” Purvis said. “They can justify their behavior. Sometimes they say they’re showing the child love, they say, ‘What could be wrong with that?’ They just don’t think they’re doing anything wrong.”

RICHMOND — A Madison County man charged in the beating death of his 7-month-old daughter said that neither he nor his wife harmed the girl.
In an interview Tuesday at the Madison County jail, William Leroy Dawes, 27, said, "I would not touch my baby. My wife would not touch my baby. She was our world."
Dawes is charged with murder in the July 2 death of Serenity Dawes. The girl's mother, Diana Dawes, 25, is charged with criminal abuse and complicity to murder. Both are being held at the Madison County jail.
Kentucky State Police said Serenity Dawes was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital on July 1 with multiple injuries, including a fractured skull, a broken leg, retinal hemorrhaging and bruising.
Dawes said Serenity stopped breathing late Thursday night, and he went to a neighbor's home to have them call 911. There was no phone at the Dawes' home on Red Hill Road. The girl was taken to the Richmond hospital and later to UK.
Dawes said Serenity had had trouble breathing since she had come back from a relative's care earlier last week. He said he thought Serenity's wheezing was because she had caught a cold from him and his 3-year-old stepson, Connor, who was taken into protective custody.
On a Facebook page, Dawes describes himself as "one crazy ass white boy with an attitude who loves to kick ass over family ..."
In the interview, Dawes maintained that he would never hurt the child.
"We never thought anybody would hurt our baby. She was the sweetest thing ever," Dawes said.

According to a citation, Floyd R. Johnson, 50, of 199 Belmont-Mount Holly Road, Belmont, injured his son, causing a knot and swelling on his right eye. The child was younger than 16, but the citation did not specify the age of the child.
Johnson was released from Gaston County Jail Friday after posting a $500 bond.

There is a line between parental discipline and child abuse which a Livonia man is accused of crossing.
David Bolton has been ordered to stand trial on three charges of child abuse and intent to cause great bodily harm for beating his 9-year-old son with a belt and stepping on him, leaving the youngster with bruises and abrasions around his eyes and on his torso.
A preliminary examination was held in Westland 18th District Court Thursday — Livonia District Court judges had recused themselves from hearing the case since the boy's mother works for the court.
The youngster, who just finished third grade, testified that he and his sister divide their time between their divorced parents. On April 7, he said that they went to their father's home after school. On the way home from school, the boy said he accidentally soiled his underwear. He said he changed into clean underwear but didn't know what to do with the soiled underwear, so he placed it in the clothes dryer. Some time later, the boy said his father found the underwear.
“He was really angry, he started hitting me with a belt. He looped the belt so it was like two spankings at once,” the boy testified.
Standing in the corner of the kitchen, the boy said his father hit him more than 10 times with the belt, striking him in the eyebrow and eye area, the chest and thigh.
“He kind of stepped on my back with his shoe and pushed me down, I couldn't breathe very well. He did it again later,” said the boy. “His hands were pressing down on the counter while he pressed with his foot. I kind of blacked out for a few seconds.”
The boy testified that he remembered thinking that he was going to tell his school principal about what happened with his father. Due to the injuries visible on his face, the boy said he was sent to talk to school administration, who called police. The boy subsequently was taken to an urgent care clinic to be examined.
Defense attorney John McLean questioned the youngster, focusing on whether his client had told the boy he would be punished for not completing household chores.
“I knew I was going to be punished when he (Bolton) went for the belt. I was putting dishes into the dishwasher when he hit me with the belt,” the boy testified.,
The boy's sister, 11, became very emotional and cried while giving a similar account of the incident.
“Dad was really mad and started hitting him over and over and didn't stop, he was holding it like a loop,” said the girl. “Dad was stepping on him, on his back. He was bouncing. His hands were on the counter. I think he was using two feet.”
Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Angela Povilaitis agreed that the evidenced presented didn't support one of the charges — child torture — and asked that it be dismissed. She did argue that the other charges — first-degree, second-degree and third-degree child abuse — were warranted.
McLean argued that the seriousness of the charges — the first-degree child abuse carries a 15-year prison sentence — was not supported by the evidence. He noted the medical record showed the youngster suffered only abrasion and contusions — not the serious mental or physical harm required by the statute.
“It may not raise to the level of serious physical harm, but there is no question that a 9-year-old receiving a beating like this at the hands of his father caused mental harm,” said Judge Mark McConnell. “The defendant's behavior can be described as losing it. There is no other intent that can be inferred other than great bodily harm by a full-size adult male.”

He noted the medical record showed the youngster suffered only abrasion and contusions — not the serious mental or physical harm required by the statute.
“It may not raise to the level of serious physical harm, but there is no question that a 9-year-old receiving a beating like this at the hands of his father caused mental harm,” said Judge Mark McConnell. “The defendant's behavior can be described as losing it. There is no other intent that can be inferred other than great bodily harm by a full-size adult male.”
