Another case where it's important to read between the lines.
Though it is not spelled out very clearly, it appears that dad DOUGLAS GRAHAM was custodial. And from what we see here, there is no good reason why. Something is a little screwy about a guy who harbors illegal, unregistered guns, then hides them (evidence tampering) after the son dies in what is purported to be a gun-related suicide. (I guess we'll have to take the word of the authorities on that?) Notice that the mother was concerned about Daddy's guns, but as too often happens, the mother's concerns were ignored. If this was in fact a suicide, I can't help but wonder if the boy was depressed living with his gun-freak father.
Notice how everybody sucks up to Daddy, claiming he has "suffered enough." All except the mother's family. Funny how that happens....

CARMEL, N.Y. — A New York father who admitted to illegally possessing the handgun his teenage son used to kill himself last year was sentenced Wednesday to five years probation after several of the boy's friends and their parents asked the judge for leniency.
Michael Graham was 13 when he shot himself Jan. 14, 2013, in a bedroom inside his father's home in Southeast, N.Y., with a gun hidden in the attic. The killing perplexed those who knew the handsome, athletic and popular eighth-grader at Henry H. Wells Middle School in Brewster, N.Y.

Three months later, New York state police charged Douglas Graham, 55, with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of evidence tampering, felonies, after investigators found three unregistered pistols in the home and alleged he hid two of them after the shooting.
"Have we all not suffered enough?" wrote one of Michael's friends in a letter that Judge James Rooney read at Wednesday's sentencing. "Taking (his father) away from us will not bring Mike back." Another friend called Douglas Graham "a father figure to the whole Brewster community."
Adding to the tragedy, Michael's mother, Sheila Kearney Graham, 52, was found dead in her California home in October. Family members say she took her own life nine months to the day after Michael did because she was so devastated over the death of her only child. Michael's parents were divorced.
Graham's attorney, James Borkowski, reached an agreement with prosecutors for Graham to plead guilty to a single felony count of weapon possession in exchange for probation. But Rooney said he first wanted to know where the guns came from and where they were in the home. Sentencing was further postponed when the probation officer assigned to the case took her own life in late October.
Rooney said Wednesday there was no evidence Graham hid any of the guns after the shooting and noted the prosecutor agreed to drop the charge. Rooney said the other two guns were secured in the garage.
Douglas Graham bought two of the guns from his father's friend at a gun show 10 to 12 years ago, Rooney said, reading from a pre-sentence report. He never registered them because he knew he got them illegally. The third gun was left behind by a tenant of a building Graham owns.
Rooney, in agreeing to the plea deal, noted that the report indicated Sheila Graham, while upset at her ex-husband for leaving guns in the home, did not feel he should be further punished.
Sheila Graham's sister, Maureen Kearney Hutchins, said by e-mail Wednesday that she was upset with the sentence.
"I can't believe it," she wrote. "I guess if you want to leave guns around where kids can get them, move to Putnam County."

I assume that since the parents were divorced, the murder must have taken place during the father's access visit, although the custodial arrangements are not really clarified. So who knows. Maybe this murderous freak had full custody.
But why should a "controlling" and "bullying" father (i.e. a father with a history of domestic violence) who also has a history of "psychiatric issues" be awarded any child access at all? This little girl paid with her life for some judge's stupidity and incompetence. Of course, none of the people who enabled this father to get access are named. Typical.

The mother of killed Bushey school girl Rebecca Thompson has said she faces “a life-time of loneliness” after the 11-year-old was strangled to death by her “controlling and manipulative bully of a father”.
Mary Thompson described the Sacred Heart Primary School pupil as “a loving and caring child” after her father Simon Thompson was sentenced to 20 years jail for her manslaughter today.
Rebecca was strangled to death in her home in Homefield Road in June after her father her taken her for a trip to London Zoo.
Mrs Thompson said: “Rebecca and I were so very close and enjoyed a wonderful relationship. Her father killed her in such cruel circumstances leaving me to find her dead - this has left me totally destroyed and devastated.
“Rebecca was such a loving and caring child who adored animals and being with people. I miss her so much. My life has become so empty without her.
“I had made plans for a new life with Rebecca but we had no chance to give that a try. It seems her controlling and manipulative bully of a father could not stand the thought of us moving on and being happy.
“Now I face a life-time of loneliness and only memories without my darling girl. The grief that fills me is hard to explain, it is like I have been forced to step out of one life into another which is full of pain, sadness and heartbreak.
“Like many young girls Rebecca liked fashion and music but now we will never go shopping together again or meet up with local friends for a coffee and a chat. I have no feeling towards my ex-husband and regard him with the contempt that he deserves.”
Soon after Rebecca was killed Mr Thompson was involved in a high-speed car crash and seriously injured. He was arrested by officers from the Major Crime Unit when he was deemed medically fit and charged with murder.
The father initially denied the charge and was due to stand trial this week but changed his plea to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility today.
Following his sentencing, Detective Inspector John Arthur who led the investigation into Rebecca’s death said: “Simon Thompson has been professionally identified as a man who had psychiatric issues at the time. However his actions last summer were callous when he killed his daughter, his only child, leaving her mother distraught.
“There are no words of comfort in cases such as these, Rebecca had her whole life ahead of her and her chance for a future has been taken away by someone who was supposed keep her safe and protect her from the dangers in this world.
“On behalf of my team can I thank Rebecca’s mother and friends for the dignity and courage they have shown during what has been a very difficult time for them and hope that with time they can rebuild their lives.”

We've posted on custodial dad EMAN MOSS before. According to this post, the mother of this girl fought for custody of this girl for several years, but lost. Not surprisingly, Daddy had a history of domestic violence in addition to his extensive history of child abuse--all of which was ignored when it came to letting him gain and retain custody of this poor child. So much for poor oppressed daddies....

Grand jury indicts parents accused of starving daughter to death
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett County father and stepmother accused of starving to death 10-year-old Emani Moss have been indicted.
A Gwinnett County grand jury indicted Eman and Tiffany Moss on charges of murder, felony murder, cruelty to children and concealing a death.
In early November, police responded to a call from Eman Moss. When officers arrived, they found Emani’s burned body in a dumpster near the apartment where she lived with her father and stepmother.
The father and stepmother were arrested after a subsequent investigation.
Court records show a history of cruelty and abuse accusations dating back to when Emani was an infant.
And a revelation that the Georgia Division of Child and Family Services had previously investigated allegations of Emani’s abuse without removing her from the home led to upheaval at the agency.
Eman and Tiffany Moss’ two younger children remain in the custody of DFACS. Despite being in jail, they both attempted to get the court to allow them custody.
Eman and Tiffany Moss are being held in the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

JACKSON, MI – A 30-year-old man has been charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse in the Monday death of his 4-month-old son.
Jackson police believe Michael Young placed Michael Young Jr. in too-hot bathwater last week and the water burned the child, Deputy Chief John Holda said.
A medical examiner concluded the child died of complications stemming from the burns, for which he did not immediately receive treatment, Holda said.
Jackson County District Judge R. Darryl Mazur arraigned the boy’s father Wednesday, Jan. 22, Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka said, and Mazur ordered him held in the county jail without bond. If convicted of the murder charge, Young will be sentenced to a mandatory term of life in prison.
A preliminary examination is scheduled for Feb. 4.
The boy, born Sept. 17, died Monday, according to his obituary, but Jackson police reported he had the hot bath several days before his death.
Jarzynka, who did not wish to discuss specifics of the case, said the accused crimes began Jan. 16.
Emergency personnel were called at 11:35 p.m. Sunday to the 100 block of Shahan Drive, north of Monroe Street, and found the child “unresponsive,” Holda said.
The boy was taken to Allegiance Health and died at the hospital, Holda said.

James Anthony Sirmans, 28, of Glendale, was taken into custody Tuesday, after specialists in pediatric forensic pathology recently classified the manner of death as homicide, according to Phoenix police.
His bond is set at $1 million.
On New Year's Eve in 2011, Phoenix police received a 911 call about a 9-month-old girl who wasn't breathing.
Sirmans told police he put his daughter, Celeste, down for a nap in the second story of his apartment. He said he checked on her 30 minutes later and found her in need of medical attention.
The infant was pronounced dead at a hospital.
“There was a lot of bruising,” said Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos. “Obviously, there was some suspicion on the part of detectives that this may be more."
When a doctor from the Medical Examiner's Office was unable to determine the cause of death, detectives contacted the pathologists.
Martos said observations at the scene and interviews conducted led investigators to believe the child's death was suspicious.
“It was decided we would reach out to more experts to get their opinion," he said.
Last August, the pathologists determined the death was a homicide, and police submitted the case to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office to obtain an indictment, Martos said.
Sirmans was arrested at Reiter's Custom Welding, where he is employed.
“I believe he’s innocent,” said his employer, Don Reiter. "The detectives always told him they were going to come after him."
Reiter said he was worked with Sirmans for several years.
“I think they’re making a mistake,” he said. “He couldn’t hurt anybody. He’s just a good guy.”
Sirmans' wife declined to comment.

Deandre Kelley's attorney filed a motion Wednesday asking that his client be allowed to attend Saturday's services for Shanti Lanza. The motion said that Kelley is unable to post the $500,000 bond to get out of jail, but wants a furlough under "appropriate law enforcement" supervision.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Melissa Powers scheduled a hearing for noon Thursday on the request.
Kelley's attorney, Hugh McCloskey Jr., declined to comment until after the hearing.
Kelley has pleaded not guilty to reckless homicide in his daughter's death.
Police say Kelley, 34, fired shots into the air outside early Sunday while arguing with the girl's mother. One of them hit the girl in a second-story bedroom, where she had fled when her parents started arguing.
By definition, a charge of reckless homicide means the death was accidental.
"His actions were reckless, but his intent was not to kill his daughter," Cincinnati police Sgt. Julian Johnson said. "If it was his intent, he'd be charged with aggravated murder."
Judge Powers ordered Kelley held on a $500,000 bond following his not-guilty plea Monday, citing statements from police that Kelley had threatened to harm himself when he turned himself in on Sunday. She also cited a lengthy criminal record with offences involving alcohol, violence and drugs.
Kelley's brother, Antwon Kelley, said outside the courtroom Monday that Deandre never would have shot the girl on purpose and that he was shaken up over her death. He described his brother as a family man and loving father of seven children who lost his teenage son a year ago in a still-unsolved shooting.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that police said Sunday that Deandre Kelley came home drunk at about 3 a.m. and that his longtime girlfriend, Shanti's mother, refused to let him in.
That's when, police said, Kelley fired shots into the air, including one that hit Shanti in a second-story bedroom. She died at a hospital.
Relatives have described Shanti as a happy, beautiful child who loved her father. She was a ballet dancer who enjoyed rapping with her father and was set to attend the School for Creative and Performing Arts next year, they said.

NORFOLK The father of a 4-month-old girl has been charged with murder in the baby's death, police said.
Frederico L. Vick was charged Thursday, two days after the child died at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, said Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman.
Police arrested Vick on Sunday and charged him with felony child abuse and neglect after the baby's mother, Victoria M. Mcglothlin, walked into her apartment at 800 E. Princess Anne Road and found the child unresponsive.
The baby, Skylar-Raine Mcglothlin, was taken to the hospital about 5 p.m. Sunday.

Norfolk father charged in four-month-old girl's death

NORFOLK The father of a 4-month-old girl has been charged with murder in the baby's death, police said.
Frederico L. Vick was charged Thursday, two days after the child died at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, said Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman.
Police arrested Vick on Sunday and charged him with felony child abuse and neglect after the baby's mother, Victoria M. Mcglothlin, walked into her apartment at 800 E. Princess Anne Road and found the child unresponsive.
The baby, Skylar-Raine Mcglothlin, was taken to the hospital about 5 p.m. Sunday.
