Father pleads not guilty in baby’s death

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Eddie Salazar Sr., the Carthage man accused of killing his 8-month-old son, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in Jasper County Circuit Court on Monday.
Salazar Sr. was arraigned in front of Jasper County Circuit Court Judge Gayle Crane on Friday on a charge that accuses him of killing Eddie Salazar Jr. on Feb. 4.
Salazar Sr., who is being held without bond in the Jasper County Jail in Carthage, waived the reading of charges in his arraignment on Monday, is scheduled to appear before Crane at 9 a.m. April 19 for “pre-trial motions or change of plea,” according to the docket record filed on Case.net, the on-line Jasper County Court records system.
Salazar Sr. waived his right to a preliminary hearing on March 17 and was bound over for trial.
Police say he called 9-1-1 and told authorities that two men broke into his home, knocked him unconscious and took the child from the home late on Feb. 4.
The call sparked an intense two-day search for the missing child, including an Amber Alert that police sent out to the public.
After about 36 hours, police said they determined Salazar was lying about the masked intruders.
Searchers found the baby’s body floating in the Spring River east of Carthage at about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 6. An autopsy determined the baby died from a skull fracture but they have not revealed how the baby was killed.
Violent father murders mother during court-ordered visitation (Mankato, Minnesota)
Not to worry for Daddy though, because he sounds like a master of manipulation (the kind who seek out foreign brides often are). He countered by filing an order of protection against HER--just to muddy the waters, you know. Plus, he was successful in finding idiotic social workers and therapists who happily smeared her with vague "anti-social personality" accusations--the kinds of accusations that are easily explained by Russian cultural differences, poverty, stress, and trauma. For a while he even got temporary custody.
But finally the various "experts" figured out a little of what was going on--at least enough to determine that the mom wasn't the "monster" that Dad made her out to be. In fact, serious questions were now being raised about Daddy's "lack of empathy" around the children, and the children's "anxiety" about being around Dad. Nevertheless, Dad still got joint legal custody and weekend visitation--until he refused to return the children to their mother after a visit.
Then Mom was awarded sole custody and Dad got 2 hours of visitation a week.
But ANY visitation with an abuser is too much. What Dad managed to do was turn the visitation into an opportunity to gun down and murder his ex-wife--while their young children--ages 7, 5, and 4--were in their mother's car. Daddy apparently forced the mother's car off the road, smashing his own SUV in the process. Daddy then hijacked a second SUV at gunpoint and took the kids with him. When he was arrested the children were with him in the vehicle.
At least in this case, it was clear to even the casual neighbor that Daddy had a few loose nuts. Sounds like the neighbor did a better job of sizing up Daddy than the parade of clueless therapists, social workers, and other assorted court morons associated with this case.

An online match, a bitter divorce ... a violent death
Burnsville man accused of ex-wife's shooting death in Mankato park
By Nick Ferraro and Frederick Melo
Pioneer Press
Updated: 03/29/2010 11:56:57 PM CDT
Suffering from depression and anxiety, a Burnsville computer consultant created a Web site to rant against his former wife and a judge who oversaw their divorce.
Joel Munt claimed on the site that Svetlana Munt had odd habits, including "sucking the brains out of raw fish," and that the judge was "corrupt" and the child's legal advocate was a "rabid dog (who) needs to be removed from power."
But in April 2009, a Nicollet County judge found the 32-year-old woman was the more mentally capable of the two and awarded her sole custody of the couple's three young children.
On Sunday, Joel Munt, 33, was arrested in the shooting death of his former wife, whose body was found Sunday afternoon in a car at Rasmussen Woods park in Mankato, Minn., where she lived with the children.
Joel Munt's mother, Joan Munt, said Sundays were his visitation day with the kids. "We never would have thought this would happen," she said.
Munt was jailed in Blue Earth County on probable cause second-degree murder, Mankato police said in a statement. He was scheduled to appear before a judge today.
Munt was arrested without incident after a Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office deputy pulled over a car-jacked sport-utility vehicle. Police said Munt took the SUV at gunpoint.
Three children were with Munt when he was arrested, the Mankato Free Press reported Monday on its Web site. According to the Web site, the children were in the car with Svetlana Munt when she was shot. The couple's children are a 7-year-old girl and two boys, ages 5 and 4, Joan Munt said.
Court records paint a stark picture of Joel Munt's personal and financial situation, which spiraled downward after he filed for divorce in Faribault County in December 2006.
The case was moved to Nicollet County in April 2007 and dragged on for another two years, with Joel Munt's attorneys repeatedly filing to remove themselves.
In October 2008, Joel Munt filed to proceed "in forma pauperis" — "in the form of a pauper" — effectively waiving filing fees because of his financial troubles. He ultimately represented himself in court.
From 2007 to 2009, judges in Nicollet, Faribault and Dakota counties awarded at least four financial judgments against Joel Munt on behalf of five creditors.
Nicollet County Judge Todd Westphal, who finalized the divorce, held Joel Munt responsible for the more than $100,000 in debt the couple had accrued.
SHOTS AND A COLLISION
About 11:50 a.m. Sunday, Mankato officers responded to reports of shots fired at Rasmussen Woods. It was reported that a man with a gun was in the park's cul-de-sac area. Police said Joel Munt fled the scene before officers arrived.
According to police, an SUV had collided with a midsized passenger car and forced it off the road and into small trees. The SUV's engine was running, and the transmission was in gear. Its rear tire was still spinning as the SUV pinned the car against the trees.
Svetlana Munt was found face down in the car and unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police a man with a gun had fled the park just before officers arrived. They said the man was traveling south in another SUV.
The gunman reportedly had commandeered the second SUV from a good Samaritan who had stopped at the crash scene.
Munt was arrested on County Road 90. A handgun and other evidence were seized.
The three children were in protective custody Monday.
ABUSE ORDERS
Joan Munt said her son met Svetlana, who was born and raised in Russia, through the Internet. According to divorce documents, the couple married in November 1998 in Russia and had three children while living in Minnesota Lake, west of Albert Lea. They separated around October 2006.
In 2006, shortly before divorce proceedings began, Svetlana Munt filed for a domestic abuse order for protection against her husband. He countered by filing one against her.
In December 2006, a judge dismissed both orders and awarded temporary custody to Svetlana Munt. Her husband received temporary custody in April 2007, but a guardian ad litem reviewed psychological evaluations of both parents and concluded neither parent could provide "appropriate care for the children."
In 2008, both received joint legal custody. The children stayed with their mother in Mankato most weekdays for school.
That changed after September 2008, however, because of an incident in which Joel Munt refused to return them to their mother after a visit. After that, he was allowed two hours per week with his children.
In December 2007, a licensed social worker concluded the children were "securely attached" to their mother, "anxious" around their father and "uncomfortable" around his live-in fiancee, Tracy Schantzen. The social worker found that Joel Munt showed a "lack of empathy" toward the children.
According to a court-ordered psychological evaluation, he also was depressed and uncomfortable around people and "hypersensitive" to the judgment of others.
It found he "has marked discomfort around others leading to relationships occurring primarily via computer contact."
CONCERNS
On his Web site, DragonEmpire.ws, Munt expressed concerns about his ex-wife's behavior and mental health, some of which was echoed by court-appointed social workers and therapists. During a brief stay at a Mankato women's shelter, she hoarded food and used "vessels other than a toilet for urinating," according to court documents.
A psychological evaluation by a therapist also found she exhibited "anti-social personality traits ... with rapidly shifting emotions ... (including) dishonesty, failing to meet the children's needs and a lack of remorse or concern."
With time, however, the court found her parenting skills improved. Judge Westphal concluded in April 2009 that she was not the "monster" her ex-husband made her out to be.
The court also expressed concern about Joel Munt's appearance and mental health.
On Monday, a neighbor, Nathan Estep, said "he always got kind of a weird vibe" from Munt and that he rarely saw him outside the house in daylight hours.
"He always had on some sort of alien or 'Star Trek'-type T-shirts. ... His hair was always messed up," he said. "Every time I talked to him ... he would look at the ground."
On Monday, Schantzen said she is "just still in shock. I did not see this coming at all."
She declined to comment further, but in a note posted on the door of their home, she directed reporters to Munt's Web site.

Father pleads guilty to killing infant son

A Stafford County man admitted yesterday that he killed his infant son last year.
Jason Wade Andre, 31, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and child abuse yesterday in Stafford Circuit Court.
Andre, who was also convicted of possessing a firearm as a felon and possession of marijuana, will be sentenced June 28 by Judge Charles Sharp.
According to the evidence presented by prosecutor Eric Olsen, rescue workers and police went to 6 Beech Drive in North Stafford early June 29 in response to a 911 call.
Andre was performing CPR on 7-week-old Marcus Andre when help arrived. The child was not breathing.
The child was rushed to Stafford Hospital and flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he died a few days later.
Olsen said Andre told authorities that he got up about 2 a.m. to feed the child, who was crying.
He had taken him downstairs and changed his diaper when the child started having trouble breathing. Andre notified his wife, and 911 was called, according to the story.
The child's mother told police that the baby was fine before that night.
Olsen said subsequent examinations showed the child was anything but fine.
He said the child had significant brain swelling, retinal hemorrhaging and brain tissue damage, all consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
The child also had 13 rib fractures that had occurred at least a week earlier. The child's other injuries included bruises on his shoulder and buttocks.
"It was obvious this baby had suffered horrible abuse," Olsen said.
Andre was arrested more than a month after the child's death. His house was searched and among the items seized were a number of guns, marijuana and materials for a marijuana grow operation.
Andre has three prior felony convictions and was not legally allowed to own a firearm.

Jealous father who killed his two children sentenced to 28 years
Petros Williams strangled children with internet cables as a message to estranged wife who had used online dating sites
Helen Carter guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 30 March 2010 14.45 BST Article history
A jealous father who strangled his two children to death to get revenge on his estranged wife was jailed today for a minimum of 28 years.
Petros Williams, 37, killed his four-year-old daughter, Yolanda, and two-year-old son, Theo, in October last year at their home in Manchester. He throttled them in their sleep with internet connection cables, a method chosen as a message to his wife, who had been using online dating sites. He denied murder.
Sentencing him at Manchester crown court, the trial judge, Mr Justice Parker, said it was "hard to conceive any more shocking crime".
In the days before the murders, Williams made a farewell video in which he told the children to face the camera and say: "We will miss you, Mummy." He was furious that his estranged wife, Morongoe Molemohi, 30, had begun seeing men whom she met using dating websites.
A jury found Williams guilty of both murders after 90 minutes of deliberation.
During the five-day trial Williams claimed his wife carried out the killings.
Passing sentence, Parker told him: "There is no doubt that you intended to kill them. It is hard to conceive any more shocking crime than a parent deliberately taking the life of his or her child.
"We saw from the video that Yolanda and Theo were happy children, full of love and laughter, with a whole lifetime ahead of them and, above all, absolute trust in their father who, for entirely selfish purposes, would end their brief lives.
"You remain in denial. You have simply refused to come to terms with the enormity of your deeds." He told him he had shown "not an ounce of remorse" adding: "Your pity has been exclusively reserved for yourself."
The prosecution said the internet cables were used as a symbolic act of punishment to his wife. It was described as "a spiteful, selfish reaction to the breakdown of his marriage".
The couple moved from their native Zimbabwe to the UK in 2002 and had lived in Manchester for five years but their marriage suffered difficulties and both had affairs, the jury was told.
The video was among several notes found at his flat in Whalley Range, Manchester. It was labelled: "Daddy, Yolly, Theo. Byee The End", with a note attached which that read: "Play the video, made for your memories, thank you, Petros." It shows the children in the living room, with Williams asking them: "Where's Mummy?"
On the day of the murders, Molemohi received a silent call from her estranged husband. She found Williams lying on the double bed with the children and initially thought they were asleep, but realised her son and daughter were not breathing. Williams was lying next to them dazed, but uninjured, next to a noose. She dialled 999 and tried to resuscitate them, but it was too late. Postmortem examinations showed both had been strangled.
Their father was arrested and collapsed when he was taken into custody.
Senior investigator Vinny Chadwick of Greater Manchester police described Williams as "a cruel man who took the lives of two beautiful children".
He said: "He sought to control his wife and when she would not submit, he took away those she loved most." Chadwick said he continued throughout the trial making false allegations about Morongoe and refusing to accept responsibility for his actions.
He added: "He will now have a long time to reflect on what he has done and hopefully feel some of the hurt he has done to others."

Deputies investigate 18-year-old father for child abuse, say he swung baby’s head into wall
By Naples Daily News staff report
Posted March 29, 2010 at 3:24 p.m.
An 18-year-old South Fort Myers man arrested on burglary and pot possession charges is under investigation for child abuse, accused of swinging his young daughter’s head into a wall.
Jarrett Wells Forsyth, who lists addresses in the 11000 block of Isle of Palms Drive, Fort Myers Beach and the 7200 block of Bucknell Drive, Fort Myers, remained Monday in Lee County Jail pending posting of $11,500 in bonds.
According to Lee County Sheriff’s Office reports:
At 1:22 p.m. Sunday, Forsyth became enraged because of text messages on the cell phone of Krista Caitlin Smith, 20. He grabbed their 10-month-old daughter and went to the front door in a rage. Timothy J. Smith, 50, Krista’s father, of the 16000 block of Wisteria Drive, stopped Forsyth, but during the argument Forsyth swung the baby, hitting her head on a wall. The baby “was visibly disoriented and acting strange.”
The grandfather got the baby and handed her to his daughter. Forsyth was ordered to leave the house and not come back. He refused and the two got into a pushing match. Timothy Smith got Forsyth outside, and hit him. Forsyth fled, but came back at 2:55 p.m. He climbed through a bedroom window. Peggy Smith, 60, Krista’s mother, found him. She left the house and went to a neighbor’s where she called her husband and deputies.
Timothy Smith was following his daughter to the hospital to have the baby treated. Paramedics who had gone to the house told her if she didn’t want the baby taken by ambulance to have her checked at the hospital.
Meantime, Timothy Smith said he saw Forsyth walking on McGregor Boulevard and his daughter stopped to speak with him. Forsyth saw Smith and told Krista Smith he was going “to beat the …. out of him.” He picked up a large branch and went toward the father. The deputy found the branch about three feet away from Forsyth.
Forsyth was handcuffed and put in a cruiser. The deputy later smelled marijuana, pulled Forsyth out and found what field-tested positive as marijuana on the floor board. Forsyth was arrested on the burglary and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana charge. As of Monday he had not been charged with the child abuse count.
The baby apparently was not seriously injured, said Tony Schall, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
Dad shoots wife, the mother of their 3 children, in attempted murder-suicide (Lansing, Michigan)
But we're assured that there is "no need to fear." Maybe if you're a guy. But women are more likely to be killed by an "intimate" than some random home invader, so some of us do have reason to fear. But instead of addressing the real issues related to domestic violence, this article indulges in patronizing "move right along folks--nothing to worry about" platitudes. This doesn't benefit anyone. Except those who benefit from ignorance, which are mostly abusers and those who enable them.

Local Woman Clings to Life After Attempted Murder Suicide
Posted: Mar 30, 2010 5:15 AM CDT
A man is dead and a woman is fighting for her life after an attempted murder suicide. It happened just before 7:30 Monday night at the Village Town homes, on the 5800 block of Haag in South Lansing. But, police say the community has no need to fear.
On a brisk March night, at the Village Town homes in Lansing, a family was destroyed.
"I had gone out the back door to try and get one of the cats in the house and heard the first shot." Resident Raini Majeske said. She then heard a women scream, followed by two more shots.
"That's when I went out the back door and noticed the bodies laying in the parking lot. I ran over to see if I could help anyone and the gun was laying there."
Police said the bodies were those of a man and women in their late thirties, who have three kids together. They said man died at the scene, but the woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
"There is indication that they were either married or divorced or going through a separation at this time, but it's too early to tell." Captain Mike Yankowski, of the Lansing Police Department, explained. He said it appeared the man shot the women than killed himself.
But, police are still trying to figure out why.
"There's no reason to believe there is another shooter or somebody that was responsible for the incident that we haven't located yet." Yankowski said.
Which is why Majeske said she's not scared... just a little shaken up.
"We're not scared, we're shocked. This is a relatively safe neighborhood. Never had an issue like this and I doubt we ever will again."
The incident is still under investigation. Police say they hope to learn the motive for this tragedy very soon.
Police will not release the names of the victims or the ages of their kids. At least one of the kids was home at the time... they are being interviewed by police.

Judge Kevin Cronin Jails Disabled Mother
Add comments
Mar 26 2010
Judge Kevin Cronin of Allegan County, Michigan, sentenced disabled protective mother Maria Melinn to jail for 21 days in response to non-payment of child support. Her disability is reported to be from a broken back allegedly inflicted on her by her ex-husband.
In 2008, Kevin Cronin campaigned against the prior incumbent judge based on a “Family Values” platform. He was endorsed by the religious right American Family Association, the Family Rights Coalition – PAC, and several Father’s Rights groups. His campaign smeared his opponent for being liberal and associated with homosexuals.
In 2009, Dads Of Michigan.org honored Judge Kevin Cronin ”For efforts in maximizing child access to both parents and his work to support both parents involvement in children’s lives.”
Cronin does seem to be concerned with Father’s Rights, but not a child’s right to be with their mother. Compare this disabled mother’s sentence to a father’s sentence Cronin gave to a man whose son was stabbed.
Cronin sentenced the 34-year-old to 90 days in jail, 2 years probation and more than $2,400 in fines and costs for being an accessory after the fact to a felony…
Cronin was struggling with the sentencing, saying he wanted to hand down a substantial punishment for Joseph Embree’s lack of judgment, but realized the three children need to have their father with them.Harsher punishment would have meant unemployment and loss of the home, Cronin said. “It would destroy your relationship with the children.”
Cronin projects an image of piety, but he really seems to be a man who hates women, at least unmarried women who are mothers. This misogynistic judge does not reflect family values, but patriarchal Father’s Rights. (Unless “Family Values” is code for patriarchy) This judge is making the United States family court system look like the Judeo-Christian version of Sharia law.
