Father accused of striking infant

A father is accused of slapping his 4-month-old son across the face, leaving the infant with bruises and reddened eyes.

Alcide J. L’Heureux, 25, of 97 John St., was charged Wednesday with second-degree child abuse, after medical staff at Hasbro Children’s Hospital alerted Pawtucket police late Tuesday night about the baby’s injuries.

Police Maj. Arthur Martins said L’Heureux had been home alone with the baby and the child’s 3-year-old sister when the children’s mother went out Friday night.

Neither of the parents noticed the baby’s injuries until Tuesday, when they brought him to the hospital to be checked for bruises that developed over his face, Martins said. The extent of the baby’s injuries is not known, Martins said.

L’Heureux told the police that his son had a fever, so he brought him into the shower, Martins said. The baby was still fussy, and L’Heureux slapped him in the face, Martins said.

L’Heureux was arraigned in District Court, Providence, on Wednesday, and ordered held on $30,000 surety bail. The state Department of Children, Youth and Families is involved in the case, Martins said.
