She hadn’t seen her for years, yet Opal Austin believed her daughter was happy and working in America.
That’s what Austin, who was living in Jamaica, says she was told by her ex-husband, who was in Canada with their daughter, Melonie Biddersingh.
Now, Austin knows the horrifying truth.
In 1994, Melonie Biddersingh was found dead in a suitcase doused with gas and lit on fire.
Toronto police recently charged her father and stepmother with first-degree murder.
Everton Biddersingh, 56, and Elaine Biddersingh, 50, were arrested in Welland, Ont., on March 5 and appeared in court the next day. They are in custody until their next court appearance.
“I was asking where my daughter is,” Austin told a Jamaican news agency Wednesday. “He (Everton) said she’s in America.”
Raquel Ellis, Melonie’s sister, said she thought Toronto police were going to deliver good news when officers called. “We thought it was them finding Melonie,” she said.
A simple phone call to police last November was the key that unlocked a murder mystery going back almost two decades.
“It started with a phone call from a person with a conscience,” Toronto police Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan told a news conference Wednesday.
“It goes to show the power of a phone call. It’s a difficult case.”
The call, from a person Ryan would not name, helped police identify 17-year-old Melonie whose charred remains were found in a suitcase behind a Vaughan industrial plaza on Sept. 1, 1994.
On Wednesday, police released a 1990 photo of Biddersingh holding an unidentified child in Kingston, Jamaica, where she was born.
Ryan, who heads the cold-case squad, said police know the cause of death but are not releasing it.
A police source said the teen was beaten, starved and kept in a closet. At death, she may have weighed as little as 50 pounds.
Her charred body was found when York police came across a mysterious fire. Gasoline or some other fuel had apparently been poured over the suitcase and set ablaze only minutes before an officer on patrol spotted the flames and thick, black smoke shortly after 3 a.m.
Vaughan firefighters quickly extinguished the blazing heap.
Biddersingh’s body, curled in the fetal position, was found in the once forest-green suitcase. Her fingerprints, handprints and footprints were burned off. Little was left of what investigators surmised was once curly black hair.
A forensic anthropologist detailed numerous injuries believed to be the result of a fall from a height or a car accident.
The teen had suffered fractures in the lower back, including a number of vertebrae and ribs, the pelvic area, the left knee and right ankle.
She would have been immobile and likely in constant pain, the forensics exam found.
The young woman was not treated for her injuries, York police concluded. Her fractures were believed to have taken place three weeks to six months before her death.
Melonie had never been reported missing in the years since she had been killed.
Ryan said a phone call in November prompted police to contact the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police liaison office in Kingston.
With their help, police identified the victim’s biological mother as Opal Austin, who lives in Kingston. Toronto police flew there to interview her and obtain a DNA sample. A match was made last month, identifying her daughter as the homicide victim.
“She was of the belief that her daughter was a young adult, a productive member of society” Ryan said. “She thought she was alive.”
Melonie Biddersingh was born in Jamaica in 1977 and came to Toronto with brothers Dwayne and Cleon to live in Parkdale with her biological father and stepmother.
Dwayne was 15 when he died in 1992 in a fall from their 22nd-floor balcony. His death was ruled a suicide but police are taking another look at the case.
Officers were executing a search warrant and conducting forensic testing Wednesday on Close Ave., where the couple lived at the time of Melonie’s death. “My information was that her life in Toronto wasn’t pleasant,” Ryan said.
She was kept in seclusion in the apartment shared by the couple and six children, Ryan said.
None of the children went to school here. The youngest was an infant at the time. They are now “productive” adults, Ryan said.
O’Neil Biddersingh, who identified himself as the oldest son of Everton and Elaine Biddersingh, said he vaguely remembers life in Parkdale. Asked what his parents told him about Melonie, he said: “Um, they actually said she ran away or something like that.”
O’Neil and his sister are distraught. “We just don’t want to talk about this, it’s our right,” she said, declining to give her name.
“It’s just a horrible time right now. One minute my parents are here, then they’re in jail for murder.”
The parents lived in Parkdale until about 1996 and returned briefly to Jamaica. They then came back to Canada.
Police did not release details of the lifestyles or livelihoods of the accused couple in Welland.
David Houser, who lives in the other half of the duplex the Biddersinghs rented on Ontario Rd. in Welland, said he watched undercover officers police lead the couple away in handcuffs.
He said the Biddersinghs moved into the place last fall and lived with their two sons.
“I was probably one of Everton’s only friends,” Houser said. “He was friendly and they were very religious. This is pretty nuts. I can’t really believe what the police are saying about them.”
He said Elaine often sang choir music with girlfriends at their home. Everton spoke a lot of Jesus, his bike and his native Jamaica.
“He would tell me about the simple life in Jamaica, but he really loved the cold in Canada — I mean, who loves the cold? He always seemed so happy about everything, even bad weather,” Houser said.
Everton would cycle everywhere in Welland and would call on Houser, a cyclist himself, to help him with bike repairs. The Biddersinghs lived simply and would use the nearby Hope Centre for food from time to time, he added.
Ryan credited many other agencies for the arrests: Jamaican authorities, Niagara Regional Police, the RCMP, York Regional Police, the coroner’s office and the Centre for Forensic Sciences.
This was the second major cold case leading to arrests by Toronto police in the past few months.
In December, a man serving time for a 1994 murder was arrested in custody and charged in the 1981 rape and murder of a woman in Mississauga.
Ryan said the phone call that cracked the Biddersingh case should provide hope for others connected to unsolved cold cases.
“I am hopeful for all those other families who have lost loved ones to murder,” the cold-case detective said. “For them I say, ‘Just don’t give up, remain hopeful, because we have not forgotten about you or your loved ones.’ ”

A FATHER who set up a secret camera in his bathroom to film his teenage daughters in the shower cannot explain why he did it.
The man, who cannot be named, has pleaded guilty to one aggravated count of possessing child pornography and one count of engaging in indecent filming of a minor.
His crimes, which included more than 2000 computer files, were detected during a police raid in June.
In the District Court today, the man, 50, sat in the dock with his head hung during the majority of his sentencing submissions.
Michael Lutt, for the man, told the court his client was having marriage difficulties when he began to spend considerable time online.
This, he said, led to the viewing of pornography.
"The defendant was considerably conflicted by his own conduct," he said.
"On two occasions he actually threw his hard drive away only to drift back into looking at images again."
Mr Lutt said the man filmed four separate incidents in his bathroom, which were later located on his computer, along with a collection of downloaded images.
"The defendant admits he set up a camera in the family bathroom of the home," he said.
"He is essentially unable to explain what it was that motivated him to engage in this behaviour."
Robert Ford, prosecuting, said the seriousness of the offending did not warrant a suspended prison sentence.
He described the offending as containing "sinister overtones".
The man was remanded in custody and will be sentenced next week.

Clarksville, TN – On March 18th, around 9:15am, a 26 old woman arrived home on Darlene Drive and found a one year old child standing alone in the street. The child had no shoes on, wearing only a t-shirt, and a soiled diaper. The child was covered in mud and wet.
A man who saw the woman approach the child exited his vehicle and said the child had been outside for about 10 minutes but thought that someone was watching the child.
The woman took the child to two different apartments, but was unsuccessful locating a parent or guardian.
She took the child inside and attempted to clean the child up and went back outside and resumed her attempts to locate the child’s residence. Several people outside pointed to 145 Darlene Drive, Apt C., which was an upstairs apartment, and said the child belonged there.
The woman went upstairs to Apt C where the door was open, saw Kory Fagan laying on the couch asleep, and had to yell loudly to get him to wake up. Fagan, the child’s father was hostile toward the woman, took the child, and went back inside.Clarksville Police Officers were called to the scene around 9:40am and had contact with Fagan, who said he had been folding laundry and did not believe the child knew how to go down the steps. Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services was also notified to respond to the scene.
When EMS arrived, the child was still dirty, wearing a soiled diaper, and had red marks on her back. EMS took the child to the emergency room for evaluation and the Department of Children’s Services was notified.
The child’s mother was not at home when this occurred.
After Detective Misty Darland interviewed witnesses and completed her investigation Kory Fagan was taken into custody.

WREXHAM, Wales - A British woman said she is grateful her home was burglarized because it exposed her father as a pedophile.
Lizzie Pethig, 34, was distraught when a raider stole jewelry, cash and computers from the house she shared with her parents David and Denise Pethig.
But her anguish turned to disgust when the thief tipped off police he had found more than 8,500 depraved child porn images on David Pethig's laptop.
Speaking after her father, 59, was given a 12-month suspended jail term, Lizzie Pethig said, "Dad's betrayal has changed my life forever. But part of me is glad that we got burgled."
"That thief had a conscience -- which is more than my father had. If he hadn't been found out, he'd probably still be downloading child porn," she added.
Chef Lizzie Pethig and her mom -- who was married to David Pethig for 35 years -- now have moved into a new home away from her dad.
They were forced to move out after vigilantes ransacked the home in Wrexham, North Wales, where the family lived for over 30 years.
The thief left David Pethig's laptop in a derelict house before alerting police, and word of the vile porn stash had gone around the local estate.
Lizzie Pethig -- who was working away in Oxford when the burglar struck last April -- said, "Dad didn't seem too concerned. He just told us the insurance would cover it. But then the house was targeted again -- and this time it was completely trashed."
The police then told Lizzie Pethig and her mom Denise, 59, what the thief had found on the laptop.
Factory worker David Pethig claimed he had downloaded just a few images of teenagers. But the truth came out when he appeared at North Wales' Mold Crown Court last November.
There were 8,500 images and 400 videos, including some rated at the worst level. As well as his suspended term, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years after admitting 17 charges of making indecent images.
His wife said, "He really should have gone to jail."

Note that the mother is not accused of abuse--in fact, she took the baby to the emergency room--but she has lost custody anyway.
Why in the world would we assume that dad VICTOR PATTERSON SR. "accidentally" slammed the baby's head, when it appears that this dimwit was perfectly capable of throwing a 13-week-old infant into a coffee table because he was "upset"? Sounds like the head slamming could been deliberate to me. But you see this a lot in abuser daddy stories. A Lincoln man is accused of throwing his 13-week-old son into a coffee table while upset, then accidentally slamming the baby's head into the bottom of an open medicine cabinet the same day.
A doctor at Children's Hospital in Omaha discovered Victor Patterson Jr. had a skull fracture, five broken ribs, a lacerated liver and a broken collarbone. The boy's mother took him to the emergency room at BryanLGH Medical Center East on Thursday evening after he kept vomiting his baby formula.
Police believe earlier that day, the boy's father, Victor Patterson Sr., squeezed him hard enough to break his ribs, and, after setting him on a counter near their bathroom sink, jerked him upward, hitting the baby's head against the cabinet in their apartment at 1523 Superior St., according to an affidavit by Investigator Michael Barry of the Lincoln Police Department's Family Crimes Unit.
Weeks earlier, the boy's collarbone was broken when his father squeezed him tightly, the affidavit says.
Patterson Sr., who turned 25 Saturday, the same day he was arrested, appeared in Lancaster County Court on Monday on a charge of felony child abuse. Judge Jean Lovell set his bond at 10 percent of $25,000. He remained in custody Monday.
Authorities already had taken custody of the baby boy and a 15-month-old daughter.
Why in the world would we assume that dad VICTOR PATTERSON SR. "accidentally" slammed the baby's head, when it appears that this dimwit was perfectly capable of throwing a 13-week-old infant into a coffee table because he was "upset"? Sounds like the head slamming could been deliberate to me. But you see this a lot in abuser daddy stories. All these guys who are perfectly coordinated when it comes to handling a ball in basketball or football can't manage to avoid "accidentally" slamming the baby's head into a cabinet. Bull crap.
