With the death of his 3-month-old daughter, a man who had been charged with her beating now is likely to face a charge of murder, officials said.
The upgrading of charges is awaiting the results of an autopsy that will be conducted today on Ianah Sherrod, of the 600 block of East 133rd Street on the Far South Side.
On Sunday, the child's father, Ivory Harmon, 29, of the 11300 block of South Forest Avenue, had been charged with aggravated battery of a child, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.
Ianah was brought to University of Illinois at Chicago Medical by her father on Thursday afternoon, telling police officers who were called there that he had found her unresponsive in her crib.
The child, who showed signs of having been beaten, was resuscitated and placed on a ventilator, Kubiak said. But she died Tuesday afternoon, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
An autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of her death. She suffered multiple skull fractures, brain bleeding and retinal hemorrgaging, a source said.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said it has opened an investigation into the girl's death
