(HOUSTON) — A Houston father is charged after police say he beat his daughter for choosing a black dance partner. According to court documents, it happened April 11 at a home on Woodlark in Houston.
Aaron Aranza’s 14-year-old daughter was about to have her quinceanera, and a group of people was at his mother’s home for a dance practice.
The traditional dance calls for multiple female and male dance partners (damas and chambelanes). Aranza’s daughter reportedly chose a 15-year-old African-American boy as her dance partner.
The girl told police she was outside with all the dancers when her father came outside and said the party was canceled. Aranza allegedly asked his daughter, “Are you serious? You really want that [N-word] to be your chambelane?”
That’s when Aranza started pushing the boy and said, “I don’t care that you are a kid,” court documents state.
According to an affidavit, Aranza then took his daughter inside and beat her with a belt. He also dragged her outside, hitting one of her arms on a coffee table.
Aranza is charged with injury to a child.
