BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Lowell man was ordered held without bail at arraignment Friday in connection with the death of his 9-week-old son.
Christopher Berry, 23, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the baby's death.
Prosecutors said police responded to Berry's home in May and found the baby on a sofa with irregular bleeding and blood coming from his mouth. Berry said he found the baby limp and unresponsive and later said the child had fallen from a couch. He then said he dropped the boy on his head.
Later, Berry said he became frustrated at the baby's crying and shook him for about 30 seconds.
The child was taken to a hospital and found to have brain bleeding, retinal hemorrhages and swelling of the brain. He died on May 15.
Berry was originally charged in Lowell District court but his case was moved to Middlesex Superior Court due to a conflict of interest with a relative. He will be in court again Jan. 27.
Berry has a long history of run-ins with police. Since 2011, he has been charged with violently throwing his girlfriend out of their apartment, breaking and entering and larceny.
Berry also allegedly lured pigeons to a parking lot then drove his car through the flock, killing six birds. The animal cruelty case is still pending.
