A Transylvania County man was arrested last week and charged with felony child abuse after the Department of Social Services investigated injuries sustained by his 5-month-old son.
Terrance Deron Lewis, 43, of 4015 Old Hendersonville Highway, Pisgah Forest, faces one felony count of child abuse inflicting serious injury, said Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Kreigsman.
The investigation began after Lewis and the 5-month-old’s mother took the baby to Transylvania Regional Hospital last week, he said.
“The hospital decided to transport the child to Mission Hospital and contacted DSS about the child’s injuries,” he said.
Lewis originally told officials that his son fell, and the injuries were from the child hitting a piece of furniture, Kreigsman said.
“The injuries were not consistent with a fall,” he said. “The State Bureau of Investigation drafted the warrants, and Lewis was arrested on June 22.”
He is being held in the Transylvania County jail under an $80,000 secured bond.
