Investigation Complete In Gladstone Child Abuse Case

GLADSTONE, Mo. -- Gladstone police said they have completed their investigation of a child abuse allegation involving a 6-week-old infant.
Officers said the infant was left with the father at the time of the incident on May 31. The infant's mother returned home to find the baby was having trouble breathing and was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital, investigators said.
The emergency room staff told police that it appeared that the baby had been abused. The medical examination showed the infant had a number of broken ribs, internal organ injuries and a head injury.
Police said the infant's father, Jonathan M. Finnell, told them that the infant had slipped out of his arm while he was filling a water bottle and fell to the floor.
Finnell has been charged with first-degree assault with bond set at $250,000. He is in custody in the Clay County Jail.
