WEST UNION, Ohio(LI) - A man who had taken a child hostage surrendered to officials after walking out of the woods where he had fled late Wednesday, officials said.

Areas of Sunshine Ridge in Adams County were searched Wednesday afternoon after the hostage situation developed, Adams County Sheriff Kimmy Rogers said.

According to police, a relative reported at 1:30 p.m., Jason Montgomery was in the area of a logging road near Shawnee State Forest with his son and had allegedly threatened to harm himself.

Shortly before 4 p.m., Adams County Sheriff's office SWAT team members were involved in a standoff after following Montgomery's vehicle.

Montgomery was allegedly observed putting the barrel of a weapon in his mouth while holding the child.

He later fled his vehicle, police said.

By 4:45 p.m., Adams County Sheriff's Office members were combing a wooded area, looking for Montgomery and his 5-year-old child.

Police helicopters were also being used to search for the pair.

Montgomery gave up sometime around 8 p.m, officials said. His son was not harmed during the incident.

Montgomery was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation following his surrender.
