A father has been charged after allegedly leaving his toddler in a locked car while shoplifting in south-eastern Sydney, police say.

The 33-year-old man was at a Pagewood shopping centre yesterday afternoon when he was allegedly seen stealing car accessories, police said.

Police said the man initially resisted arrest, before revealing he had left his son in a car.

After a search, police said they found the 13-month-old boy in a distressed state in a car with the windows closed and doors locked.

The man was charged with neglecting a child or young person in his care, larceny and resisting arrest.

He was granted bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on April 7.

Police said the toddler was well and was returned to his mother.
