WEST HAVEN, Utah – A West Haven teen is in jail after his 2-month-old daughter was taken to the hospital for injuries from alleged child abuse that included a brain injury and multiple fractures.
According to a statement of probable cause, the infant’s mother said the father, 18-year-old Mark Berry, was put in charge of watching the baby for about 30 minutes.
When the mother came home, she noticed the child was twitching and seemed to be having a seizure. The child was taken to McKay Dee Hospital, and after a CT scan revealed bleeding in the baby’s brain the child was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital.
Berry did not go to the hospital with the child, but he was later located and he admitted he was frustrated and “forcefully” put the child in a swinging chair twice, according to a statement of probable cause. The statement indicates Berry admitted to police “that he knew his actions would likely cause injury to the child.”
Medical staff reported the child suffered a serious injury to the back of her brain and several fractures, including fractures to the right leg and left arm, according to the PC statement.
Berry was booked into the Weber County Jail. The child is in the hospital in stable condition.
