A PARAMEDIC accused of battering his baby son to death was heard whispering 'Please forgive me' as his child's life support machine was switched off, a court heard today.

Three-month-old Charlie Gibbs was being cared for alone by his father Gavin when he was rushed to hospital.

Medics found he had suffered fractures to his skull, upper arm, left leg and ribs.

When Charlie tragically died two days later from a brain injury, doctors checked his twin sister, who was also at the hospital being treated for a chest illness, and discovered injuries inflicted on two occasions, the jury was told.

Richard Whittam QC, prosecuting, said little Charlie was placed on a ventilator but was found to be brain dead.

And he told the jury that after the ventilator was disconnected, a consultant paediatrician overheard his father whisper: "Please forgive me."

Gibbs, 41, of Brook Vale, Erith, Kent, denies murdering Charlie in October 2008.

He also denies causing grievous bodily harm to Charlie and his twin, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
