Dad arrested in abuse of 7-week-old son; baby may have permanent brain injury (Tucson, Arizona)

Was this apparently clumsy idiot babysitting? Where was Mom? Working? Why was he showering with a newborn baby anyway? (Assuming Daddy is telling the truth this time.) Dad is identified as DAVID HOLLENBECK.

TUCSON - A seven-week-old baby is recovering from a traumatic brain injury; today, the child's father was arrested and charged with child abuse.

Police say 26-year-old David Hollenbeck injured the baby, who may suffer permanent brain damage.

At video court this evening, the judge set bail for Hollenbeck at $15,000. If he's able to post it, he is to have absolutely no contact with any minor, including his infant son, by court order.

For his first Christmas, two-month-old Alex was in the hospital, under the care of nurses and doctors.

"The child is expected to survive but is also going to have significant mental deficiencies or neurological deficiencies as a result of this incident," said Tucson Police spokesperson Sgt. Maria Hawke.

On December 10, Hollenbeck called 911, and "he told paramedics or the original emergency responders that the child was only suffering from minor ailments, but when he arrived at the hospital, medical staff learned that he had very significant injuries including bleeding to the brain," Hawke said.

That's when police say Hollenbeck changed his story.

"He then told them he dropped the child while showering," Hawke said. Police investigated his story, and found inconsistencies.

"The severity of the injuries didn't match up with merely a fall in the bathtub or a shower," Hawke said.

Hollenbeck now faces one count of felony Child Abuse, and is next scheduled to appear in court on January 9.
