MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- The father of a 3-month-old girl was charged with child abuse after inflicting injuries that sent her to a hospital, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said.
Christopher Murray Upshaw, 20, faces three counts of felony child abuse.
The mother of the infant took her to a health clinic on Monday, investigators said. Workers referred the baby to the McDowell Hospital’s emergency room and law enforcement officers were contacted.
The baby had head and brain injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, the Sheriff’s Office said. She was later transferred to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville and has since been released and is continuing to recover, officials said.
The investigation is ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Upshaw remains in jail.
