Father faces 15 years in 'worst' child abuse case

BRIDGEPORT -- It was the worst case of child abuse local police and state experts said they had ever seen. The 5-year-old boy had numerous scars on both legs, his back and chest; his lip had been split, healed over and split again.
His father now faces 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to the abuse Thursday.
"This young child was flogged with a cord over and over again during an extended period of time. A portion of his ear is missing and we still don't know how that occurred," State's Attorney John Smriga told state Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin.
But 23-year-old Daquon Gomillion appeared oblivious to it all. He stood before the judge looking around the courtroom with no sign of concern.
Asked by the judge if he had ever held a job he joked: "Baby-sitting," he said.
During the brief hearing Gomillion pleaded to first-degree assault and risk of injury to a child under the Alford Doctrine. He is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 12.
In September 2013, the boy's mother brought the boy to a dentist on East Main Street for a preschool checkup, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
The dentist called the state Department of Children and Families. The boy was subsequently examined by Dr. John Leventhal, of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital.
"This 5-year-old boy has extensive scarring over most of his body," Leventhal said. "The number of scars is too numerous to count and the number exceeds the number that I have ever seen on any other child."
During an interview at the Center for Children and Families, the boy told investigators he had been beaten by Gomillion with a brush and electric cords since he was a baby.
He said the beatings "hurt very bad" and he was made to apologize to Gomillion after each one.
His mother, Jarelis Lugo, was subsequently arrested after police said she admitted Gomillion had been abusing the boy for years. She is awaiting trial on risk-of-injury charges.
Smriga said the boy is now living with his grandparents under the supervision of the state Department of Children and Families.

Alfred A. Hill entered an Alford plea to one count of involuntary manslaughter. That means he didn’t admit guilt but conceded that prosecutors have enough evidence to convict him.
Franklin County Common Pleas Judge David E. Cain imposed the sentence, which was recommended by the prosecution and defense as part of a plea agreement. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dismissed charges of murder, felonious assault and child endangering.
Hill’s son, also named Alfred Hill, was found unconscious by paramedics at his paternal aunt’s apartment at 1229 Bay Tree Court in Reynoldsburg on the morning of July 12, 2012. He died at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Assistant County Prosecutor Jennifer Rausch said the father struck the child in the chest, stopping his heart.
Hill declined to make a statement in court.
The boy’s mother, Ashley Bennett, told the judge she has struggled to stay strong for her two other children.
“Someone told me to never hold onto anger and forgive even if you don’t want to,” she said. “No matter what the sentence is, my son will never come back to me.”

Poor mom was saddled with a deadbeat loser, and now she has lost custody of her remaining child thanks to Daddy's crimes. This is typical of the way that mothers are punished for the deeds of men. That the mother is not charged with anything that I can tell is irrelevant to the authorities.

Christopher Foster admitted to crushing his 8-month-old son to death in a moment of stress and frustration.
He was sentenced to 15 years after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child neglect charges Thursday.
Foster told investigators shortly after his son died, on June 8, 2012, that he had been feeding Leon Davis Foster and the child became wedged in a chair. Foster showed little emotion in a pair of interviews right after and two days after his son’s death, Assistant Solicitor Catherine Huey said.
Eight months after Leon died, however, Foster teared up in a follow-up interview.
“He confessed and said the child would not stop crying so he held the child to his chest until the child stopped breathing,” Huey said.
Foster held Leon in a way that the infant could not breathe, she said.
Foster’s wife had gone to get a bouncy chair from her in-law’s home and when she came back, she called 911. Leon was pronounced dead at AnMed Health Medical Center.
A forensic pathologist determined at the time that the death was an accident. The same pathologist, Dr. Brett Woodard, later ruled the death a homicide in light of Foster’s confession.
Huey said both an accident and an intentional act had the same medical signs.
Defense attorney Jennifer Johnson said Foster had several mental issues as well as extensive financial and family problems that contributed to his frustration.
“It was a terrible, horrible thing that he did,” Johnson said. “I know he wishes every day he could take it back.”
Foster enlisted in the Navy after graduating from T.L. Hanna High School and married his high school sweetheart, who soon became diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Johnson said. Foster also had his own mental health issues in the military after having a breakdown due to family and job pressures, she said.
“It was too much too soon,” Johnson said. “He made a choice in what I will call a moment of panic.” Foster and his family were living in a room of a home on Edgefield Drive, with 13 people in the small house belonging to his wife’s parents.
Foster also had bounced from job to job, losing work twice after wrecking cars and being underemployed at other jobs. He was not involved in drugs or alcohol, Johnson said.
Judge Brooks Goldsmith rejected Johnson’s request of a 5-year sentence with probation and he went with the prosecution’s recommendation of a 15-+year sentence.
Foster and his wife have an older child, who has been placed in foster care. Foster was originally charged with homicide by child abuse.
Foster made few signs of emotion during the court hearing and told Goldsmith that the stress and mental health issues got to him.
“It should not have happened,” Foster said. “I should never have ended my (mental health) treatment. I feel guilt and burden for an accident that I can never live down and I think about it every day.”

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — A Round Rock father is facing charges after his 3-week-old daughter showed up at the hospital with a broken leg and bruising to her brain. The girl’s parents brought her to Dell Childrens Medical Center on Sept. 8 and hospital staff alerted police.
The girl’s father, William Charles Hansel, told police he had become frustrated with the child during the night and pulled his daughter’s leg while trying to change her diaper, the document said. He believed that was what caused her leg to break. When the girl woke up a second time, Hansel told police he dropped the child on the changing table and squeezed her head.
Hansel is charged with injury to a child, a first-degree felony. He is being held in the Williamson County Jail on $100,000 bond.

URBANA — A 2-month-old child is expected to recover from internal injuries that authorities believe may have been inflicted by her father over the weekend.
State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Wednesday she charged Anthony R. Wilkins, 19, who listed an address in the 1100 block of North Gregory Street, Urbana, with a single count of aggravated battery to a child following his arrest Tuesday by Urbana police.
Sgt. Dan Morgan and Rietz said Wilkins was taking care of his infant daughter over the weekend at a home of one of his relatives in the 800 block of North Division Avenue, Urbana. He does not live full time with the child, Morgan said.
On Monday, the child's mother picked her daughter up and noticed that she was having trouble breathing. She went right to Carle Foundation Hospital with her.
Rietz said doctors there found the child to have five fractured ribs and damage to her esophagus and liver, all of which are "indicative of squeezing or blows to the back, according to doctors."
Carle officials notified Department of Children and Family Services representatives, who then notified police.
Morgan said interviews with Wilkins revealed "he probably squeezed her very hard because she was crying and wouldn't stop. He was frustrated because the mom was supposed to pick her up."
Morgan said medical officials said the baby may be in the hospital a while but is expected to make a full recovery.
If convicted of the Class X felony, Wilkins faces six to 30 years in prison.
He is currently serving a sentence of probation after being adjudicated a delinquent minor in 2011 for burglary.

Dad arrested for raping 13-year-old daughter (Apalit, Philippines)
A couple of interesting things here. Notice that UNNAMED DAD has a HISTORY of doing "something" (i.e. raping). It happened at least once two years ago, but was obviously ignored. Also notice that the complaint was submitted by the "victim's relatives" and that there is NO MENTION of a mother in this account. Makes me wonder if she is working overseas while Daddy plays custodial parent (i.e. rapist). In addition, note that illegal drugs are blamed rather than the Daddy. Usual excuses, cover up for a rapist father.

APALIT -- A 13-year-old girl was allegedly molested by her own father in Apalit town, the police said on Tuesday.
Lolong (not his real name) was brought to the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) last September 25 following a complaint by the victim's relatives that the 64-year-old suspect sexually molested his own daughter Maria (not her real name).
Superintendent Samuel Sevilla, chief of Apalit police, said the crime happened while the victim was watching a television program in their house.
"Based on the statements of the victim's relatives, the suspect has already done something two years ago. But the victim still wasn't raped at that time," said Sevilla.
The medical examination results of the victim confirmed sexual assault on her while the suspect is believed to have been under the influence of illegal drugs when the incident took place.
"According to the information that we have received the suspect is a drug user. Maybe the suspect was under the influence of drugs when the crime happened," said Sevilla.
Sevilla, meanwhile, reminded parents to be more vigilant about their children's welfare.
"For the parents, they should watch over their children more often especially like in this case which involved a minor," said Sevilla.
The suspects' rape case was brought to the provincial prosecutor, pending the filing of his violation of the Protection Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination.
