Chico-- Police have arrested a Chico man on suspicion of child abuse after he allegedly hit his 5-month-old baby causing bleeding and swelling in the child’s brain.

David Bassett, 26, was taken into custody Thursday at his home in the 2100 block of Robailey Drive after an investigation into the injuries of a baby treated at Enloe Medical Center on March 24.

According to police, the mother, who is separated from the father, and grandmother of the 5-month-old baby boy took the child to the hospital after he suffered seizures.

“After a custody exchange, the mother and the baby’s maternal grandmother observed physical injury to the child and noticed that the child was not acting normal,” according to a police press release. “Soon after, the baby began suffering from seizures and was transported to the hospital.”

The baby, who had to be transferred to UC Davis Medical Center’s pediatrics department in Sacramento, was in serious condition and had bleeding and swelling in his brain, police said.
Specialists determined the injury was caused by blunt force trauma.

Chico police detectives took over the case and were reportedly able to determine the baby was injured while Bassett was taking care of him, police said. Investigators developed probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant for Bassett’s arrest.

Bassett was booked into Butte County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

The baby has been placed in the custody of his maternal grandmother and is expected to make a full recovery.
