THE father accused of assaulting his eight-year-old daughter has been further remanded in custody after appearing in the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday.
The man appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele.
He was told the court would decide on his bail application in the next court hearing.
The accused, while requesting bail, told the court he was the breadwinner in his family, where five of his seven children were still in school.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Feroz Khan objected to bail on the grounds that the accused had a habit of hitting all his children.
He asked the court to remand the man in custody for the safety and welfare of the victim, as well as her siblings.
The matter has been adjourned to February 6.

The accused appeared at the Suva High Court this morning and is convicted for incest and sexual assault.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has asked for a minimum sentence of ten years.
Judge Justice Salesi Temo says this sentence should serve as a lesson to all fathers as having sexual intercourse with your own children is a serious offence.

Suva High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo has sentenced a man to 17 years imprisonment for raping his daughter.
In his ruling, Justice Temo described the case as the worst parental abuse case that he has come across in the 19-years that he has served on the bench.
Justice Temo also said the sentence should serve as a warning to fathers who want to abuse their daughters in the way the accused did.
The 37-year old father of three children was found guilty of five counts of rape and two of indecent assault.
The man whose name has been permanently suppressed systematically indecently assaulted and raped his daughter from 2004 to November 2011.
Justice Temo told the accused that he unashamedly committed these crimes in the comforts of his own home, mostly in his daughter’s bedroom.
The rapes stopped when the daughter was found to be suffering from cancer and that she was 20-weeks pregnant, carrying her own father’s child in 2011.
It was then with support from the mother and doctors, that the matter was reported to the police.
The court heard the accused has three children aged between four years and 16 years. He also apologised to his wife, children, family and the court. The court has ordered a non-parole period of 16-years imprisonment.

A four year old boy, flown out of the country by his father the day after his mother's body was found burnt on a roadside, has been found by Fijian Police.
Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall of the Waikato CIB said the boy was found when Fijian police located his father. NZ Police are currently working to verify the boy's well being.
"The boy's father is a person of interest in relation to the homicide enquiry into the death of his wife, 28-year-old Ranjeeta Sharma, of South Auckland whose body was found west of Huntly Thursday night. Our inquiry is continuing and we are seeking further clarification from Fiji Police of the circumstances surrounding the father being located. Until we have had further discussions with Fiji police we are unable to add more at this stage."
It is feared Mrs Sharma, 28, was the victim of an honour killing, after her charred body was found on a rural road.
The day after her body was discovered, her husband - named by relatives as Devesh Kumar Sharma - flew to Fiji with son Akash.
It was thought he was in the western Lautoka area, however a senior police officer in Sharma's home town of Ba, a town on Viti Levu's northern coast, said he has also been asked to look for him there.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman Chris Wilson said New Zealand does have an extradition agreement with Fiji.
"At this stage it is a police matter and we will provide police with any assistance they require of us."
Sharma and his wife are both Fiji nationals. Her car was recovered at Auckland airport.
Police are now working with Interpol to ascertain the safety of the child.
Investigation head Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall said the woman's husband was "a person of considerable significance" in the investigation.
On Sharma's Facebook page she posted a photo of herself and Akash in December, writing: "my little boy my life".
There are many photos of Akash.
On the social networking site she says she is married, studied at the Manukau Institute of Technology, worked at Middlemore Hospital and is from Suva in Fiji.
Michael Clark, director of the Manukau-based training provider Corporate Academy Group, said Sharma completed a healthcare programme last year and she had been expected to return this year to complete more papers.
"She was a very good student," he said.
Classmate Rachael Gapes said Mrs Sharma was a "quite friendly" woman who "used to keep her personal life away from the class".
"I know she was determined to finish the course. She was sometimes shy but very determined. She was very helpful."
Gapes said she had not met Mrs Sharma's husband, but she had met her son, who was "always happy to see his mum".
Sharma was employed at Middlemore Hospital, in South Auckland. Staff from the hospital would not comment about her.
Former neighbour Neville Callander said yesterday the family had lived in a small town-house in Manurewa for about three months last year.
He said he would say hello over the fence to Sharma, who he said was "friendly, but timid", and would see her playing with her young son.
Her husband was a courier driver who would have fellow drivers over on Friday nights for drinks.
Mr Sharma's Hamilton-based relatives revealed he was prone to outbursts of anger.
The relatives did not want to be named but said the couple moved to New Zealand in 1998 and got married in Fiji in 2002.
One relative said Sharma's parents were in Australia, but he did have aunts and uncles in Fiji.
His parents had not heard from him and were anxious for the safety of the couple's son, Akash.
"They don't know where he is; no-one has heard from him.
"Everyone is worried. We are worried about the son ... there's so many questions floating around in my head, it's hard."
Mr and Mrs Sharma visited the Hamilton couple earlier this month and all appeared normal, the female relative said. "We sat down and had dinner and they left. Everything was fine, everything was normal. They seemed happy."
However, Sharma did have anger issues, she said. "I think he's a bit off-minded.
"His behaviour is a bit weird. You never know when he is very nice or when he's going to get weird.
"Even when you're talking he can get violent. The way he talks and he gets really angry and acting crazy."
The female relative said the couple were transient and wouldn't stay in the same house for any longer than six months.
Callander said he came home to find the couple had left one Saturday about six months ago.
He understood they left with rent owing.
Police would not comment on a motive yesterday. The brutal death looks like an honour killing - a type of murder carried out in the Indian subcontinent when the victim was seen to have brought shame upon the family - according to an expert.
"Burning is often the chosen method, because it gets rid of evidence and it can be made to look like an accident," said Priyanca Radhakrishnan of the Shakti Community Council, a national organisation that provides support for ethnic victims of domestic violence.
"We've seen quite a few high-risk cases in Wellington alone ... women who have come to our refuge and got out of situations which could have ended up in honour killings."
The most clear case of honour killing was that of Gulshad Banu Hussein, 23, who died within minutes after she was set alight by former boyfriend, Ahmad Riyaz Khan, at the Shell service station in Atkinson Ave, Otahuhu, in 2004. The motivation was said to be her rejection of him.
Amnesty International activism support manager Margaret Taylor said thousands of women were the victims of honour killings worldwide every year. Many went unreported, but Human Rights Watch estimated there were 5000 "bride burnings" a year in India alone.
"Even in Western countries it has occurred, because these immigrant populations are coming to them. The immigrant communities have more at risk ... because the women don't always speak good English and they are more isolated at home."

A LABASA man was yesterday jailed for 16 years for 15 counts of rape and one count of indecent assault against his 13-year-old daughter.
High Court judge Justice Sitambarampillay Thurairaja said: "When a person in authority, such as in the position of a father commits this sort of crime against his own daughter, he should be condemned and shown no mercy."
"I am mindful that government and the entire world is making all endeavours to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation."
The man began sexually molesting his daughter a day after her 13th birthday in 2009 at their home.
He pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault that happened on January 16, 2009 and 15 counts of rape that occurred between the 17th of the same month to March 13, 2010.
The court heard that in most of the offences the man would send his wife out of the house on some pretext so that he could rape his eldest child. The attacks continued for well over a year.
Justice Thurairaja said the aggravating factors in the case included the fact that the victim was his own daughter.
"You made her sexually active from a very young age and made her to be your sex slave," he said.
"You betrayed the bond between a father and a daughter."
For the aggravating factors, Justice Thurairaja added seven years to an initial starting sentence of 13 years.
For the mitigating circumstances like the fact that man was a first offender, sole bread winner and was remorseful he reduced the 20-year sentence by four years.

The fathers right's movement "woe is me" line has truly gone international. Dad MAHENDRA SHARMA has been convicted of murdering his 8-year-old son, strangling him with a pair of blue jeans. The excuses made for him? The poor dear was "not allowed" to see his sons from his first marriage, and only had "limited rights" to see the son from the second marriage (the one he killed). Okay, geniuses. You think that maybe in retrospect there was good reason this POS was kept from the kids? Ponder that for a while.

The court heard that Sharma took his son to Waidroka in Navua where he used the boy’s pair of jeans to suffocate him.
In his ruling Acting High Court Judge Salesi Temo said Siddharta pleaded for help, but to no avail and died a few minutes later. Sharma then attempted suicide, but didn’t succeed.
The Court noted that Sharma was a troubled man – he was divorced twice and not allowed to see his three sons from the first marriage and had limited rights to see Siddhartha – his son from his second marriage.
After Sharma heard that Siddhartha’s mother had re-married and moved to New Zealand leaving their son behind he decided to kill the boy and himself to end his turmoil.

Custodial dad found guilty of raping 9-year-old daughter (Suva, Fiji)
Read this account carefully. This UNNAMED DAD maintained custody of his three daughters after he separated from his wife. Now he's been found guilty of raping (at minimum) one of those daughters. Not a word of explanation as to how or why the father got custody of these girls--but then newspaper accounts seldom explain the custodial context or decision making that made a crime possible.

A CHURCH pastor who was found guilty by the High Court in Suva for raping his daughter who was nine years old has been jailed for 15 years.
Justice Salesi Temo told the 42-year-old man he had not only breached parental trust but had ruined his daughter's world.
The offences were committed between January and May 2006.
"She was already traumatised by the break-up of your family in 2005. She looked to you for fatherly support and guidance. She trusted you as a father. You were supposed to respond in kind. You were supposed to guide and counsel her to become a strong and confident young girl," Justice Temo said.
"However, you did exactly the opposite. You ruined her world by indecently assaulting her, and raping her twice. Then you committed incest on her."
Justice Temo said the girl was emotionally scarred for life. He said at times she cried without a reason, had very low self-esteem and was frightened.
"She gets so angry easily and wants to be left alone on most occasions. She stares a lot. Her school grades have deteriorated. She shuts down when questioned. On occasions, she changes from a happy little girl to an angry one, and then a dumb one," Justice Temo said.

Justice Temo said those were the by-products of his offence.
"You turned your own daughter into this kind of world. Instead of living her life as a young innocent girl, she is now being exposed to the above kind of world. In a sense, your have ruined her life as a child, given your offending," he said.
He said the father had total disregard to his daughter's right to live a happy and peaceful life, not only as a child but also when she grows into the adult world.
The High Court heard that following his separation from his wife in 2005, he moved with his three daughters in January 2006 to their new residence in a squatter settlement in Suva where the abuse started.
It heard that the men sexually abused his daughter between February 11-18, February 19-28 and again between May 1-31 in 2006.

A CHURCH pastor who was found guilty by the High Court in Suva for raping his daughter who was nine years old has been jailed for 15 years.
Justice Salesi Temo told the 42-year-old man he had not only breached parental trust but had ruined his daughter's world.
The offences were committed between January and May 2006.
"She was already traumatised by the break-up of your family in 2005. She looked to you for fatherly support and guidance. She trusted you as a father. You were supposed to respond in kind. You were supposed to guide and counsel her to become a strong and confident young girl," Justice Temo said.
"However, you did exactly the opposite. You ruined her world by indecently assaulting her, and raping her twice. Then you committed incest on her."
Justice Temo said the girl was emotionally scarred for life. He said at times she cried without a reason, had very low self-esteem and was frightened.
"She gets so angry easily and wants to be left alone on most occasions. She stares a lot. Her school grades have deteriorated. She shuts down when questioned. On occasions, she changes from a happy little girl to an angry one, and then a dumb one," Justice Temo said.

Dad jailed for raping 14-year-old daughter in front of her brothers; dad had 4 previous rape convictions (Fiji)
UNNAMED DAD has been jailed for 14 years for raping his 14-year-old daughter, and at least one of these rapes was in the presence of her younger brothers. Dad has FOUR PREVIOUS RAPE convictions. So you have to wonder why the hell this piece of sh** was allowed around any female, especially a minor. Where is the mother in all this? As usual, there isn't a word.

A MAN who raped and indecently assaulted his 14-year-old daughter has been jailed for 14 years.
The 44-year-old man was charged for raping and indecently assaulting his daughter, on one occasion in the presence of her younger brothers.
Justice Paul Madigan said such crimes were abominable and becoming far too common in Fiji.
"A 14-year-old girl is still not mature and the animal behaviour of her father will surely scar her for the rest of her life," he said.
"The courts cannot ignore the severity of such behaviour. It is a breach of trust of the worst kind and a destruction of a father/daughter relationship."
In mitigation, the unemployed accused referred to his role as sole breadwinner and submitted a reference letter from the Prisons Department, claiming he was a member of a rugby team and a role model and source of inspiration to younger unemployed men.
But Justice Madigan said he saw no meaningful mitigation, and taking into consideration the accused's four previous rape convictions, took a starting point of 12 years for rape.
"The fact that it was his own daughter and that he used his status as her father to override her will, I take as a serious aggravating feature for which I will add two years to the sentence," the judge said.
"For the rape he is therefore sentenced to 14 years imprisonment."
For two indecent assault charges, Judge Madigan considered three years imprisonment and increased this by another year after considering the offences were committed in the presence of the victim's brothers.
He ordered that the indecent assault sentence be served concurrently but that two years of the sentence be served consecutively to the rape sentence.

Where ever you go in the world you see the same story: Violent fathers who murder children rather than losing their "possession" (custody) of them to others. Despite what the fathers rights people say, this isn't about love or "personal pain." This is vicious, self-centered indifference to the rights of children to live their own lives free from abuse. And so we see the same story with UNNAMED DAD in Fiji.

THE remains of an eight-year-old child were exhumed by the police in Waidroka, Serua, yesterday after a 46-year-old man, who'd allegedly been living in bushes there for more than two months, confessed that he had murdered his son.
The man, who's believed to be a former employee of the Parliament of Fiji, was arrested on Monday evening after phone calls by staff of the Matanipusi Eco Resort that a shabby looking man had been spotted in the area.
Deputy Director Police Operations SP Erami Raibe confirmed the man, whose last known residence is Vatuwaqa in Suva, was arrested and police have been questioning him.
When apprehended, SP Raibe said the man confessed to killing his son.
The man had earlier been sighted in the area during the school holidays last month.
Vunaniu resident Mataiasi Toma, 44, said he had found the man in bamboo bushes, and he'd admitted that he'd killed his son.
SP Raibe said the man was separated from his wife and the custody of the child had been granted to the child's maternal grandparents in Sigatoka.
No charges have been laid yet.

The villager of Kuku in Tailevu appeared before Magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman at the Magistrates Court in Nausori today.
The villager pleaded not guilty to the charge of indecently annoying a female.
It is alleged that on April 9 this year, the accused indecently touched his daughter at their family home in an attempt to find out whether she was still a virgin.
The teenager reported the matter to a relative who later alerted the police.
Police prosecutor Inspector Subhan Ali said the accused has been bailed and a review of his bail conditions would be discussed in court on July 13, when the case resumes.
