Notice how the facts are fudged. This crime didn't involve "parents." It involved a custodial dad and a step. Children aren't born to custodial dads. They are put in the care of custodial dads either because a married mother died, or somebody made the decision that the father should have custody. Even unmarried fathers are only getting child custody these days because there has been a change in social policy granting them custody--this was NEVER the case historically.
So how did dad ROGER HEMINGWAY and the charming step get custody of this child? Is mom still alive? If so, how did this abuser strip her of her child and who helped him?
Of course we know none of this information, because the MOTHER HAS BEEN UTTERLY ERASED from the story. It's as if Daddy and the step found the baby in the cabbage patch.

Parents charged in child abuse case in Horry County
By Vicki Grooms The Sun News
Two adults from Aynor were arrested Wednesday for beating their child, according to a report from the Horry County Police Department.
Roger Hemingway and Jennifer Hemingway were charged with abuse/to inflict great bodily injury upon a child. Both are being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, and no bail has been set.
According to the police report, a school resource officer said the victim had reported being abused by his parents on Halloween night, saying he had been beaten around the legs with a baseball bat by his father. The victim went to the Loris emergency room and then to McCloud Medical Center in Florence for surgery.
The victim’s father and stepmother told ER personnel that the victim had been in a four-wheeler accident, the report said. The resource officer talked with the father about the victim’s injuries once the victim returned to school. The school nurse also talked with the victim’s stepmother about the injuries once the victim returned to school, as well as about treatments the victim may need at school. Both parents relayed the same four-wheeler accident story to the officer and the nurse.
On Tuesday, the victim went to the school nurse in reference to his arm being swollen and said he got in a fight at home with a child from his neighborhood and was thrown into the porch, the report said. Upon further inquiry by the resource officer, the victim said he was beaten about the arms and left shoulder and hit in the left eye by his stepmother for not doing something he was told to do and not doing it fast enough.
The Department of Social Services was called, and the victim is currently in emergency protective custody, along with a second victim, who was taken into protective custody due to the nature of the injuries to the first victim.
