Jail for "doting dad" who killed 5-month-old son (Heol Brychan, Bargoed, Wales)

This piece of merde not only killed his infant son, but tried to frame the baby's mom for the crime. But finally that's all settled, and dad DAVID MORRIS is headed to jail.

A FIVE-MONTH-OLD baby died in his mother’s arms after being fatally injured by a father who was said to dote on him.

David Morris, 28, had shaken his tiny son Jay causing brain damage and had squeezed him hard enough to cause his liver to tear, but he said nothing as eight different doctors examined him.

Instead he claimed the child just had wind and, after experts discovered the injuries, let blame fall on his girlfriend and saw her arrested for murder.

Morris eventually owned up and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Jailing him for six and a half years, a judge told him: “It was callous and selfish behaviour.”

Teenage mum Nikki Paine – who was only 19 when Jay was born and when he died – said afterwards: “As a result of his lies I have spent 18 months accused of killing my baby and have not even been able to begin grieving.

“He stole precious moments I should have had with my son.

“I had everything I ever wanted and now I have nothing.”

In a statement, Nikki also revealed how their older child had been taken into care following Jay’s death, and how she had also had to move away from the Bargoed area – where she felt everyone had turned against her – to return to her family in Bridgend.

She had dialled 999 when she found her child sick in his Moses basket at 6am on December 10, 2009.

The night before, after she had returned from watching her niece perform in a nativity play, she had left Jay, at Morris’ request, in his baby bouncer while his father was on the computer.

Police later found Morris had been online until 4am, and again for another hour from 5am.

He had then put Jay at the side of Nikki’s bed and left their home at Heol Brychan, Bargoed.

He went to a drug dealer in Aberbargoed at 6.30am before visiting his grandmother, where he learned an ambulance was on its way to his son.

Prosecutor John Charles Rees QC said: “He turned white and started to shake then ran out and took a taxi home.

“Once there he told Ms Paine there had been no need for her to call the ambulance because there was nothing wrong with the baby and it must just be wind.”

Jay was taken to Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil, where at first he showed no signs of serious injury and was admitted to a ward. But his condition deteriorated and had difficulty breathing.

Mr Rees said: “Following a brain scan he was transferred to the University Hospital of Wales.

“David Morris told staff the baby had fallen out of his bouncer the week before.”

The next morning Morris was told his son was unlikely to recover and the court heard he cried uncontrollably when the baby was later pronounced brain dead and was put in his mother’s arms.

David Aubrey QC, in mitigation, said Morris had a turbulent childhood before being adopted by grandparents.

“They are devoted to him and he to them,” he said. “And his children were everything to him – they were his life and he is devastated.”

Recorder of Cardiff Nicholas Cooke QC said it was accepted that Morris had not intended to cause harm, let alone kill, and there had been no long-term illtreatment of Jay.

No-one would ever know why he lost his temper and picked up the baby and shook him.

“You have never been prepared to tell us why,” he told Morris.
