This is the kind of story that western women readily associate with Saudi Arabia. What they don't know is this kind of story is becoming increasingly common outside the middle east, especially with the rise of fathers rights.

Married at 13, abandoned at 30
Salma fled her home after dad tried to ‘sell’ her again
By Staff
Published Sunday, February 27, 2011
When she was 13-years old, Salma (full name withheld) from Saudi Arabia was forced to marry a man aged over 60.
The man paid her father a dowry of SR250,000 ($68,000), but Salma says it was like she was actually sold.
Salma, now in her 30s, has no home and is deprived of seeing her six children following her divorce. When she tried to take them, she was thrown in prison for six months.
As if all this was not enough. After she was divorced and her children taken away, her father tried to sell her again - this would-be husband refused to offer more than SR100,000.
But it was her not her father who turned down that offer. Feeling that she had enough, she packed and fled her home.
“I was only 13 when this rich old man came and paid my father SR250,000. I was forced to marry a man who is as old as my grandfather… I was snatched off my fifth class at that age,” said Salma, from the central town of Makkah.
“He took me to his home in Madina and there I found that he already has three wives… I then started to spend my time playing with his children as I was a child and had no idea about marriage life.”
Salma, now in her 30s, said her marriage lasted around 17 years, during which she gave birth to four daughters and two sons.
“During my marriage to this man, I suffered from torture and very bad treatment… I then fled to my family’s house and stayed there with my children for nearly three years, after which I was divorced.”
The Saudi Alikhbariya newspaper said Salma first refused to give back the children to her ex-husband, prompting him to go to court.
“Police arrested me and I was jailed for six months… when I was released, I went back to my family and stayed for a while before another old man came and paid SR100,000 to marry me,” she said.
“I refused and fled home… I have been staying at mosques and parks all this time. My ex-husband still refuses to let me see my children. Sometimes I go to take a glance at them while going or leaving school and I could see clear marks of violence on their bodies. I think they are being tortured at home.”
The paper did not say where it met Salma or whether she has a home now. But it quoted a Saudi human rights activist as urging the woman to come along and present her case.
“If she comes and proves that her children are subject to torture by their father, then will we will talk to the police. We will also ensure protection for her and her children,” said Mohammed Kalantin, member of the Saudi Human Rights Commission in Makka.

Milton-Delaware State Police Friday February 25, 2011 investigated an assault complaint in the 23000 block of Melendez Drive Milton Delaware.
A State Police investigation into an infant assault revealed that on the evening of February 24, 2011 a 17 year old Milton teenager became involved in an argument with her boyfriend Jeff P. Schaffer Jr. of Georgetown. The initial argument appeared to be over the 17 year old teen arriving home late from a study session.
Later the same evening the teenage victim was asleep on their living room couch shortly after 4 a.m., when she heard her 5 month old crying in another room. The 5 month old is the daughter of both Schaffer and the victim. When the teenage victim went to investigate the crying she noticed Schaffer had locked the door. Schaffer and the 5 month old victim were sleeping in the same room together.
Schaffer did not open the bedroom door for several minutes as the mother attempted to gain entry. When Schaffer finally unlocked the door the teenage victim observed a shirt stuffed into their baby’s mouth. Schaffer then removed the shirt from the 5 month olds’ mouth whose face appeared purple and grasping for air. (This incident was not immediately reported to the police) I currently don’t have information as to whether the victims received medical treatment.
Later Friday morning the 17 year old victim was walking to catch her bus with Schaffer following behind. Schaffer again began a confrontation with his girlfriend. Schaffer next broke apart a watch belonging to the victim and threw it at the back of her neck as she walked to the bus stop. The victim sustained minor injuries during this altercation and did not receive medical treatment.
The 17 year old victim reported several other incidents of abuse which occurred prior to this investigation involving Schaffer.
Schaffer was arraigned for several incidents of assault, reckless endangering, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal mischief. Schaffer is currently being held in Sussex Correctional Institute on $11,700 secured bond.

Save your @$$ or be a good father....decisions, decisions. So tough being a daddy driving around with no license, a bunch of pot...and your 2-year-old daughter. But daddy ERNELL RENARD HALE was trying to be good, see. That's why he was resisting arrest. He knew if he got arrested, the police would take his daughter. So better to get into a fight with the police and try and run away.
Um yea. Makes sense. Wait, what were we talking about again? Damn, I'm wanting what this dude was smoking, man....
Well, at least Mom got the kid back. Wonder if this was a visitation gig....

The father of a 2-year-old was arrested after getting into a scuffle with a police officer during a traffic stop, then trying to flee while he left his little daughter in the car.
Ernell Renard Hale, 21, of Gainesville, later told police that he knew he did not have a license, did have marijuana and was scared police would take his daughter so he tried not to be arrested.
Gainesville Police Department Officer Christopher King received minor injuries while arresting Hale.
King said he pulled Hale over after seeing him driving in the bike lane in the 3600 block of Southwest 20th Avenue. According to King, he had to take Hale to the ground twice while trying to handcuff him because Hale was trying to run away and was struggling to get away from the officer.
Hale was charged with child neglect, resisting arrest with violence, possession of marijuana, and not having a valid driver’s license, then booked into the Alachua County jail. The toddler was turned over to her mother.

Police: Three young brothers helped dad make meth (Mannford, Oklahoma)
Once again, a piss poor example of journalism. While these three boys were helping daddy MICHAEL HAGAR manufacture meth, where was, um, Mom? You know, the female-type person or persons who gave birth to these boys? Or were these children delivered to Daddy by stork or some other drug-bearing avian courier?
All we're told is that the boys are now in the care of Oklahoma DHS. Is that because Mom knew about what was going on, and didn't intervene? Or because there was no mother in the home? And why doesn't the reporter do his or her job and tell us? And if, in fact, there was no mother in the home, why did meth head daddy apparently have custody of these boys? Or would that embarrass some crackhead judge some place?
Notice that the Affidavit of Probably Cause mentions that Daddy had a criminal record (surprise!). But there's still no mention of Mom.
INVISIBLE MOTHER ALERT.

Mannford Police: Three Young Brothers Helped Father Make Meth

MANNFORD, Oklahoma -- A 39-year-old Mannford man remains in the Creek County jail, accused of using his three sons to help manufacture meth.
Mannford Police searched Michael Hagar's home late Wednesday night after getting a tip and say they found a working meth lab and meth products.
Hagar's three sons, ages 10, 14 and 17, were turned over to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.
Hagar was one of four people arrested on complaints of endeavoring to manufacture of meth, child endangerment and possession of meth.
Read Affidavit of Probable Cause.
Mannford Police Chief Lucky Miller says Hagar rewarded his three sons with meth and marijuana when they helped him cook meth in his home. Miller says all three sons told officers they helped their father cook methamphetamine.
Miller said officers were "blown away" to learn even the 10-year-old boy had helped manufacture meth. He said the officers just stood there with their mouths open.
Miller says the two older sons tested positive for meth and marijuana. The 10-year-old said he had just smoked some marijuana but had not used meth for about a week.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the 10-year-old told police, "I help daddy the most by shaking the bottles and after we get done daddy puts the powder in a glass tube and holds a lighter under the tube while I suck on the tube."
Hagar told police he's been making meth for about a year and usually "cooks" meth 4 or 5 times a week.
He told police that he has let his sons help him cook meth on several occasions, but that "he only lets them shake the bottles."
Hagar was arraigned on the charges Friday. Total bond for Hagar is $230,000.

Young father gets 5 years for selling his 2yo son in Minqing, Fujian
Updated: 01 Mar 2011
A young father was recently sentenced to five years and eight months in prison and fined 5,000 yuan ($760) by a court in Minqing county, Fujian province, for selling his little son.
The man, surnamed Liu, 23, did not have a stable income. Early in 2010, Liu met a netizen, surnamed Xing, from Shandong province, via QQ (an instant message service in China) and knew Xing's family was eager to adopt a little boy.
At the time Liu was short of money and his girlfriend had gone back to her parents' home after a quarrel, leaving Liu and his old grandmother to take care of the son. Liu then had the idea of selling the then 2-year-old boy to Xing.
Liu secretly took his son to Nanjing, Jiangsu province, to make the deal with Xing, but lost his cell phone and could not contact Xing. Liu succeeded on his second visit, earning 45,000 yuan from the deal.
On Sept 21, 2010, Liu was taken into custody as a suspect in other crimes. He then fully realized what he had done and told his father he had sold his son. He was soon charged with child trafficking.

Man who halted bridge traffic faces a year in jail

An Antioch man who brought traffic to a standstill when he threatened to jump from the Bay Bridge or blow up his SUV has been convicted of making a false bomb threat and child endangerment because his 16-year-old daughter was in the car with him, San Francisco authorities said today.
Craig Carlos-Valentino, a 52-year-old security guard, pleaded guilty Friday in San Francisco Superior Court to the two felonies and will be sentenced to a year in county jail, said Seth Steward, a spokesman for District Attorney George Gascón.
Prosecutors originally charged Carlos-Valentino with kidnapping and false imprisonment, But a judge dropped those counts in December after Carlos Valentino's daughter testified that she didn't believe he had put her in harm's way.
The daughter, who had accompanied her father for what she thought was a breakfast outing, was not hurt.
Carlos-Valentino did not have a bomb when he pulled over near the center anchorage west of Treasure Island just before 7 a.m. Nov. 11, the California Highway Patrol said.
Upset because he believed his wife had been cheating on him, he started making phone calls to a radio station and to authorities.
After CHP officers converged on the scene, a two-hour standoff ensued, shutting down traffic into San Francisco. Carlos-Valentino eventually surrendered.

Dad arrested in 4-year-old daughter's overdose death (Fentress County, Tennessee)
Why do reporters do this? We're told the little girl was taken to the hospital by "other family members," but there is no indication as to who those family members were. If if was the mother, than why not say so? And if no mother was in this home, why not say so plainly? In which case, it might be helpful to explain WHY no mother was in this home. Why all the obfuscation? At any rate, daddy DARRELL HUFF has now been arrested. And we have no idea how his 4-year-old daughter got access to his morphine....

His son was taken to Children's Hospital & Medical Center with three bone fractures in his right leg and one in his left, three rib fractures and a bruise to his forehead, according to Omaha police. The child also had blisters on his right foot.
The injuries were called in by doctors after the child's mother brought him to the emergency room because of swelling in the baby's right leg.
A hospital official said Monday that no information on the baby could be released.
Police said Koster told hospital officials that his infant son's injuries may have occurred when he got frustrated changing the child's diaper. — Jason Kuiper

Custodial dad with history of domestic violence sentenced to nearly 6 years for burning 6-year-old son (Gresham, Oregon)
Dad DEONTAE LIONELL JOHNSON has been sentenced to six years in prison for burning his 6-year-old son's back.
But much more is going on here than just a few cigarette burns. This is a VERY SUSPICIOUS case. Notice Daddy's extensive history of domestic violence. Just this guy's CONVICTIONS include 4th-degree assault, attempted 2nd-degree kidnapping, and contempt of court for violating a restraining order. He punched the mother of his children in the eye (in front of them, no less) and dragged her to her car, all while threatening to kill her.
And with THAT history, Daddy wants us to believe she voluntarily left him in March 2010 after dropping off the kids at his apartment. Then she (conveniently) "disappeared." That's why he was now custodial, see.
Really? Where were the freaking cops and courts while all this was going on? Why wasn't this @$$hole locked up? Why has there apparently been no effort to locate the mother and verify Daddy's cockamamie story? We're just going to play along with this nonsense and throw these kids into foster care? Honestly, how "voluntary" was this mother's departure under these circumstances? Assuming that she "voluntarily" departed at all, which is rather doubtful. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if mom's "disappearance" turns out to be an unreported homicide.

Father sentenced to nearly six years for burning son
Deontae Johnson convicted of first-degree criminal mistreatment
By Mara Stine
The Gresham Outlook, Feb 25, 2011
A Gresham man, described in court documents as “mentally challenged,” will spend 70 months in prison for repeatedly burning his 6-year-old son’s back.
Deontae Lionell Johnson, 30, of Gresham was sentenced to nearly six years in prison and three years of post-prison supervision on Wednesday, Feb. 16, after pleading guilty on Jan. 31 to second-degree assault. The sentence is the minimum allowed for the crime, with the maximum being 10 years and a $250,000 fine.
A first-degree criminal mistreatment charge was dismissed.
The abuse, which caused the victim to suffer “protracted disfigurement on his back,” was discovered on June 10, 2010, when the victim told staff at his grade school in Northeast Portland that his back hurt, according to court documents. Staff examined the boy and saw multiple burns on his back. That’s when the boy said his father did it to him.
A child abuse detective noted 10 or 12 burns where the top of a heated cigarette lighter had been pressed against the skin of the boy’s upper back. Some burns appeared to be many smaller burns that formed a line, including one that was between 3 and 4 inches long, and appeared infected. The detective described it in court records as appearing “almost charred.”
When questioned, the boy’s father denied causing the boy’s injuries, saying he wasn’t aware of them or how they were caused.
But the next day, the boy tried to protect his father. The boy told child-abuse assessors that he was injured when he fell on his back. He mentioned that he’d been playing with a lighter and it somehow got on his back. The boy also said his dad knew about the injuries and put water on his back.
Doctors, however, determined that the severe first- and second-degree burns were not accidental. In a second interview with a child abuse counselor, the boy “provided clear but somewhat brief, disclosures regarding his father burning him with a lighter and whooping him with a belt and cord,” according to court documents. In addition, he disclosed that his father showed him and his two older brothers pornographic pictures of their parents.
In addition to physical abuse, evaluators diagnosed the boy with medical neglect, sex abuse and emotional abuse from being exposed to domestic violence and a father who “gets angry for stupid things,” according to the evaluation.
Finally, the boy’s 8-year-old brother told an evaluator that his father hit all the children with a cord, has put them in a cold shower and “burned my little brother’s back.”
Deontae Johnson’s criminal history includes convictions in 2006 of felony fourth-degree assault, attempted second-degree kidnapping and contempt of court convictions for violating a restraining order. Johnson punched the victim’s mother in the eye in front of the boy, and her three other children, and dragged her toward a car by her neck while threatening to kill her.
In court documents, Johnson told officials that the children’s mother left him in March of 2010, dropped the children of at his apartment in the 800 block of Southeast 190th Avenue and “disappeared.”
Johnson no longer has custody of his four children, ages 5, 6, 8, and 12. They are in the custody of the state’s department of human services.

Dad of "missing" sons faces possible life in prison; boys disappeared during court-ordered visitation (Morenci, Michigan)
We're reported on dad JOHN SKELTON and his numerous lies on several occasions now. Even without the identification of the boys' bodies--which may never be found--authorities are moving to lock up this misfit for good. Previous articles have clarified that these boys "disappeared" during Daddy's court-ordered visitation. At this point, few people think this is anything other than a triple homicide.

Father of missing Mich. boys faces possible life in prison
12:34 PM, Feb. 25, 2011
A Morenci, Mich., man, accused in the disappearance of his three sons, now faces life in prison.
The Lenawee County Prosecutor's Office has added three charges each of kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment against John Skelton, 39, whose sons have been missing since late November.
These are in addition to three counts of parental kidnapping he was already facing.
Prosecutor Jonathan Poer said today that the new kidnapping charges carry a penalty of up to life imprisonment. He said the new charges were added about a week ago after his office received additional reports from Morenci police.
Skelton's pretrial hearing, which had been originally rescheduled for Feb. 23, has been postponed to March 9. He is accused in the disappearance of his sons, Andrew, 9; Alexander, 7; and Tanner Skelton, 5, who were last seen Thanksgiving Day. His wife, Tanya Skelton, had filed for divorce earlier in the fall.
Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said earlier this month that Skelton told police his sons are with the United Foster Outreach and Underground Sanctuaries - an organization that the police chief said investigators have been unable to locate.
Weeks also said the search is being handled as a homicide investigation. Poer said Friday he would not speculate on whether Skelton will be charged with murder.
“That investigation is still ongoing,” he said.

Dad: But I got FRUSTRATED changing the baby's diapers! (Omaha, Nebraska)
Poor widdle daddy MATTHEW KOSTER. He just got so FWUSTRATED with that darn squirmy baby! Just wouldn't lay still while Daddy changed his diaper! So Daddy inflicted three leg fractures, three rib fractures, and bruised the baby's forehead.
Seriously, since we started Dastardly, we have found A LOT of stories about daddies flipping out over diaper changing. This seems to be something the male species is not entirely too fond of.

Dad kills 2 1/2-year-old son in murder-suicide (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada)
Appears dad EDWARD SHELDON had to do the daddy drama thing and murder his 2 1/2-year-old son. Could have just taken himself out of his misery, but these types are never content to do just that....No word yet on whether this was related to a recent separation/divorce, or whether this took place time during Daddy's "parenting" time.

4-week-old baby abused by dad released from hospital; where's mom? (Jefferson County, Texas)
Okay, all you dastardly readers out there. What's wrong with this article?
Well, here it is. How can you have a 4-week-old baby abused by a father--in this case by JASON JERRAUD LEBLANC--and not even MENTION that there had to be a mother in this picture at least 4 weeks before? Not one word about this baby's mother, though the baby is now going into a rehabilitative foster home. And "LeBlanc's 13-month-old child" is also being placed with unnamed "family members." How can a mother be written out of a story so completely? It's as if these kids had been found in a cabbage patch.
INVISIBLE MOTHER ALERT.

4-week-old child abuse victim to be released from hospital
By Teresa Mioli
Published 04:35 p.m., Thursday, February 24, 2011
Judge Larry Thorne ordered today that a 4-week-old admitted to the hospital with multiple signs of physical abuse be released to a rehabilitative foster home.
Medical staff determined that the newborn was a victim of physical child abuse. He suffered a skull fracture caused by compression or crushing, a rib fracture, liver injuries, a broken femur and tibia, broken jaw and bleeding of the brain, according to previous Enterprise reporting.
The child will be released from Texas Children's Hospital in Houston next week and placed in the foster home until Child Protective Services can conduct a home study on family members, said CPS spokesperson Shari Pulliam.
The child's father, 27-year-old Jason Jeraud LeBlanc, is at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility for serious injury to a child and has a $150,000 bond.
Port Arthur police were notified that the boy was admitted to the hospital on Feb. 11 and a search warrant was executed at the child's residence in the 6000 block of 17th Street, according to previous reporting.
LeBlanc's 13-month-old child was placed with family members at a house with no history of CPS-related issues.

Dad charged in abuse of 3-month-old daughter; blames his cancer (La Crosse, Wisconsin)
Dad GAVIN ATTOE was just another one of those daddies who couldn't take the crying, don't ya know. So he cracked the ribs of his 3-month-old daughter, and attempted to suffocate her. That's not going into the head fractures, etc.
Is it just me, or are these daddies getting more creative with their excuses? The other day, we had a UK daddy who blamed his child porn collection on his diabetes. This daddy is blaming his cancer. Really? I had no idea cancer forced you to bash a baby.

Father charged in abuse of 3-month-old girl
ANNE JUNGEN ajungen@lacrossetribune.com lacrossetribune.com Posted: Friday, February 25, 2011 12:05 am
A La Crosse father admitted to crushing his infant daughter's chest hard enough to hear and feel her rib crack, according to court records filed Thursday.
Gavin Attoe also confessed to bending the 3-month-old girl's knees to her chest to deplete the air from her lungs to halt her crying.
Prosecutors in La Crosse County Circuit Court charged Attoe, 29, with five counts of physical abuse of a child for injuring his daughter between Oct. 29 and Feb. 16 at his home at 829 Avon St.
Attoe, who is in remission from Hodgkin's lymphoma, blamed his medication for his loss of control.
Attoe and his wife took the infant to Franciscan Skemp Medical Center on Feb. 16 after the child began vomiting and refused to drink from a bottle.
X-rays revealed the child suffered fractures to her skull, ribs, arms and legs. Doctors also noted bruising on her abdomen, back and cheek, according to the complaint.
Attoe described for investigators several ways he "may have" caused the infant's injuries during her bouts of inconsolable crying and when she would not cooperate while he was dressing her, according to the complaint.
He said he forced her leg to her face after the infant kicked his surgical incision, the complaint states. Attoe recalled her crying in pain.
Attoe said he pulled his daughter's arms behind her back when she was flailing as he tried to dress her.
The baby had difficulty sleeping after the incident where her rib cracked, Attoe said, but he did not tell his wife or take the infant to the hospital.
"(Attoe) ... said he felt that he failed as a parent," the complaint states.
Attoe also told investigators he dropped his daughter two feet into a baby bathtub Feb. 15 after he grew dizzy, the complaint stated.
He returns to court March 9 for a preliminary hearing.

175 Killer Dads: Fathers who ended their children's lives in situations involving child custody, visitation, and/or child support (USA)
An update to our previous 76 Killer Dads, 88 Killer Dads, and 138 Killer Dads lists.
This is NOT a comprehensive list of all U.S. fathers who have killed their children in situations involving domestic violence and/or child abuse. This list is limited to articles I have found where there is an identifiable child custody, visitation, and/or child support angle in the children's deaths. Even then, I can’t claim that this is a comprehensive list of child custody, visitation, and or child-support- related murders. Quite often, newspaper articles just don’t provide enough information to make a judgment call.
There is no time limit to the actual dates of death on this list, though most are comparatively recent— usually (but not always) with an article on the deaths appearing in the last three years or so. (Often it takes years for charges to get filed in these cases, or for cases to go to trial.) Note that there are several cases going back to the 1990s.
Feel free to use this as a data base for additional research or to narrow the deaths down to the time period, geographic setting, or other criteria of your choosing.
If you know of a worthy case that has been omitted, feel free to contact me and I will see about adding the case during the next update. This is very much a work in progress.
Because many have asked which cases specifically involve a family court which ignored the concerns of a protective mother or involved notable court and/or CPS incompetence/corruption, I have marked some of the more egregious cases of that type with an asterisk. Of course, the criterion is somewhat subjective, and is also based on having enough media coverage to discern whether these factors were present. Once again, that doesn’t mean that other cases on this list didn’t involve those factors. Only that I have insufficient information at this time.
Additional information can be found on all these cases by searching the Dastardly Dads site.

Child molester assaulted daughter, niece

A convicted child molester who sexually assaulted his daughter and niece was sentenced to two years in jail Wednesday in Sarnia court.
The Lambton County resident had previously pleaded guilty to sexual assaulting the young teens, and touching girls under the age of 16 for a sexual purpose over the past two years.
He had been convicted more than 10 years ago of a similar offence.
The man touched his daughter sexually or used his finger to penetrate her on at least five occasions. There were 10 incidents involving his niece, who was older.
Police were called after the niece's father noticed suggestive messages on his daughter's Facebook page and talked to her about them.
"All I can do is apologize for what I've done," said the man, who is in his 40s.
Justice Mark Hornblower told him he abused his responsibility to protect his child from harm, along with every other aspect of parenthood. His niece was also entitled to feel safe with him, Hornblower said.
The judge said both children could be scarred for life. In a statement the niece said she felt guilty for what happened, when the responsibility and guilt rests solely on his shoulders, Hornblower said.
The man was sentenced to two years in a provincial jail, less 104 days already served in pre-sentence custody.
Assistant Crown attorney Randy Evans asked for the time to be served in a federal penitentiary, but Hornblower said the availability of treatment is uncertain in the federal system. He has recommended the Ontario Correctional Institute, a treatment centre for violent and sexual offenders.
Three years of probation will follow the jail time, when the man must stay away from his niece. Contact with the daughter is prohibited unless approved by his probation officer.
A lifetime weapons ban was imposed and he must give police a DNA sample.
The man will be on the sexual offender registry for 25 years and is banned for life from attending any place such as a playground or swimming pool where children under 16 could be present.
Publishing the man's name would breach a court order protecting the children.
