Infant's death ruled a homicide; father was caretaker at the time, yet he is questioned and released (Miramar, California)

These kinds of cases baffle me. The essential facts:

A) A 4-month-old infant dies of "unexplained injuries" (blunt force head trauma) and the death is later ruled to be a homicide.

B) UNNAMED DAD was "caring" for the child at the time the 911 call went through about the baby not breathing.

Now I put A and B together, and come up with this: Unless green aliens dropped through the ceiling and beat this infant over the head--or the usual "black guys in ski masks targeting white babies" kind of urban myth that abusers come up with when cornered--then it seems pretty obvious that Daddy had something to do with this murder. Am I missing something? But this is the answer the authorities came up with:

C. Daddy is questioned and released. Unknown if any arrests.

Huh?

Hat tip to Annie for finding this.

P.S. Commenters elsewhere are saying this a single dad. Why doesn't the media report these facts? Would it embarass some influential judge(s) that they gave a violent father custody of an infant that was later murdered? Well, it should.

Infant's death at Miramar ruled homicide
Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 10:10 a.m.

MIRAMAR – The death of a 4-month-old infant with unexplained injuries Wednesday has been ruled a homicide, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The infant has been identified as Andru Bixby of Miramar. The cause of death was blunt force head trauma.

San Diego Police homicide detectives are investigating.

The infant’s 22-year-old father, an active-duty Marine who lives in military housing at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, was caring for his son when police received a 911 call about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday that the boy had stopped breathing, according to police.

The father started CPR, and paramedics transported the infant to Children’s Hospital, where he died at 9:07 a.m. Thursday.

The father initially was questioned and released. It was unknown if any arrests have been made.
