A few years later he decided that he now wanted custody of the daughter. This after not visiting the girl or having any relationship with her at all. Then he apparently killed her too.

(DHNS):It’s another case of a young life snuffed out at the hands of those who were supposed to take care of her.
An eight-year-old girl was allegedly beaten to death by her father here on Thursday. Reason: The Class II student couldn’t memorise her lessons.
The West division police arrested Sathyanarayana Singh after he confessed to have beaten his daughter, Neha Singh, in a fit of rage for not studying properly.
Police sources said he had hit the girl with a rolling pin. Neha was the accused’s daughter from his first marriage.
Sathyanarayana, however, tried to shift the blame on a stranger. He claimed that somebody beat up Neha when she went to a nearby shop and that she collapsed on returning home. Sathyanarayana said Neha died by the time she was rushed to hospital.
The police were, however, alerted by a neighbour who suspected foul play.
“The circumstances under which the girl was found dead were mysterious. One of their neighbours alerted us. We grew suspicious after coming to know of the man’s background. He was accused of killing his first wife for dowry. The girl was his daughter from the first marriage. He said he beat the girl with a cane and she collapsed thereafter.
We have booked him for murder,” said Duggappa, ACP (Kengeri Gate sub-division). The body, which bore several injury marks, was taken to Victoria Hospital for autopsy.Sathyanarayana was married to Asha Singh, who died in 2006. Her parents Raghunath and Vasantha Singh, residents of Shimoga, had alleged dowry death. Sathyanarayana was subsequently arrested. After spending around six months in prison, he was acquitted.
Neha was only 10 months old then. Asha’s parents took her to Shimoga. After being released from prison, Sathyanarayana started a plastic mould factory in Timber Yard and married again. He was living with his mother Padma Bai, second wife and a one-and-a-half-year-old son from the second marriage.
Sathyanarayana had not visited Neha even once in the past seven years. In May, he suddenly turned up at Shimoga, claiming custody of his daughter. Raghunath told Deccan Herald that Sathyanarayana promised to take good care of the child. “We did not relent. He said as he had not divorced my daughter, he was the rightful custodian of the girl.
We unwillingly sent her. The girl could not adjust there. She had never seen her father before. She complained that her father and grandmother were harassing her and pleaded us to take her back. We thought that she would eventually adjust. But he killed her, like my daughter. He is a demon,” Raghunath said. In his statement to the police, Sathyanarayana said when he asked Neha, a class II student at SGM school in Avalahalli, some questions from her notes, she could not answer. He asked Neha to learn her lessons properly. The family left for a temple in the afternoon, leaving her alone at home to study. He claimed to have found Neha asleep on returning home. An enraged Sathyanarayana then beat her up with a baton.
D Rajappa, DCP (West), told Deccan Herald that the Byatarayanapura police have registered a case of murder and arrested Sathyanarayana. The police are investigating into the role of Padma Bai and his second wife, he added.

An Indian woman has died and her 13-month-old daughter suffered horrendous burns after her husband and father-in-law set them on fire as they slept, in a dispute over a dowry payment.
The case has shocked India, a country where people have become use to reports of bride burnings and dowry murders - there are more than 8,000 women killed every year because their husbands' and in-laws' demands for lavish dowry payments are not met.
What is particularly alarming is the attempted murder of a daughter and grand-daughter whose first birthday they had celebrated just weeks earlier.
In Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, 13-month-old Idika's eyes peer fearfully out from her heavily bandaged face as she fights for her life, after suffering 55 per cent burns.
Her mother Pravartika Gupta, a 25 year-old technology graduate, died in the hospital on Sunday shortly after making a statement to a magistrate.
She told the magistrate that as they were sleeping in their room on October 6, a fire broke out just in front of their bedroom door and noone came to their rescue.
Her father-in-law suffered minor burns in the fire, but ran away from the hospital before police could arrest him. Both he and Pravartika's husband are now on the run after police said they would be charged with murder, attempted murder and making illegal dowry demands.
Her uncles claimed Idika's father Ashutosh Gupta, a media event planner, and his father, a local government engineer, had been angry with Pravartika not only because their dowry demands had not been met, but also because they had wanted their first child to be a son.
Idika's uncles kept a vigil outside the hospital last night as nurses treated her in an intensive care burns unit where she is being kept heavily swaddled in bandages and cooling gels inside a protective tube.
Her uncle Rajesh Gupta said Pravartika had married Ashutosh Gupta in 2010 after the families had agreed a dowry payment of 1,200,000 Rupees and a Honda City car to the groom's parents.
They had spent 1,200,000 Rupees on the wedding ceremonies, had paid 1,000,000 rupees in cash and were about to pay the remaining balance when the in-laws demanded a new apartment too. "They said they had given a flat to their daughter's in-laws in dowry and we should do the same. They are economically well-off but greedy," he said.
"We bought gold and clothes for them on the baby's first birthday but they were not satisfied. A flat would cost between 30 lakhs rupees and a crore. They said you got our royal family, you are not as good as we are. You must be proud to be our relatives and you must pay."
Women's rights campaigners said the attack on a baby girl as well as a mother was "extreme" even in a country where people have become "desensititized" because of the high number of dowry deaths.
"They were going to kill the mother and they didn't want the daughter. Then the man will marry again and get another dowry. With a child, someone has to look after it, and no-one wants the responsibility of a girl if it had a boy this would not have happened. It is appalling," said Ranjana Kumari of the Council for Social Research. Outside the hospital, Idika's shocked surviving relatives were trying to grasp how such barbarity could have been committed for money. "Why did he do this? He had everything, a beautiful wife, a beautiful girl, a prosperous house. What was in his mind we don't understand," said Rajesh Gupta.

AHMEDABAD — A man, who sat on railway tracks along with his 13-month-old son in a bid to commit suicide, changed his mind after seeing a train speeding towards them and ran away, leaving the toddler to die in the horrific incident.
Mehul Patel, who owns a small milk dairy, had been demanding dowry from his wife and had a heated exchange with her on the issue on Monday night. An enraged Patel left home on the excuse of taking his son for a walk but when he did not return till midnight, the family members approached the police.
The police told them about the train accident involving a child who was later identified by the wife from the boy’s clothes.
According to the police, the driver had stopped the train after spotting a man and a child on the tracks but not before the kid was crushed to death. Patel, who saved himself, fled the scene after witnessing the gruesome incident, and is on the run.
The police have registered a case of murder against Patel.

Dad convicted of mom's murder based on 5-year-old son's testimony (Delhi, India)
India is a very different place than the US, Canada, Australia and other so-called "developed" countries. We don't have dowries for one thing. But here are two thing that are remarkably consistent.
1) In all areas of the world, the media still persists in blaming horrific violent crimes on a "quarrel" or a "disagreement" and the like--but only in domestic violence cases. This is utterly stupid. If a stranger broke into your house and tied you up, and you uttered a few words of protest, and the stranger assaulted you, would the media blame the attack on a "quarrel" ? Of course not. This language is almost exclusively reserved to dismiss or minimize male violence against women.
2) It also seems that violent fathers all over the world have caught on to the "alienation" schtick. Your dying wife tells the authorities that you set her on fire. Your utterly traumatized 5-year-old son testifies to the same. But oh, the little boy must have been "tutored" to say such a thing! That's the standard argument these days. Never mind the evidence. For a child to report violence or abuse must mean (by definition to these guys) that he is being "coached" or "alienated" by some vindictive person. Ridiculous.

Delhi: The testimony of a five-year-old child came in handy for proving the crime of his father who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for burning alive the boy's mother a year ago.
The testimony of the boy, who was present in the room where his father had set his mother ablaze, was also corroborated by the dying declaration of the victim.
"The five-year-old child deposed in the court that accused Babu had burnt his mother by pouring kerosene oil and lighting match sticks and he (Babu) also used to beat his mother after taking 'daru' (liquor)," said Additional Sessions Judge Savita Rao referring to the child's deposition against his father.
The court turned down the plea of the father that the statement of his son cannot be relied upon as he is of tender age and might have been tutored by his in-laws to depose against him.
"It is clear from the deposition of the child that he is very truthful and rather had very fairly admitted what he had been told by his grandparents (maternal), yet he described whatever he had seen from his own eyes also," the court said and also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on Babu.
In this case, Babu poured kerosene oil upon his wife and set her on fire after a quarrel on September 28, 2009. She was taken to hospital by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
On the same day, she made a statement before an executive Magistrate in the hospital naming her husband as responsible for the crime.
She had said that "all of them (her in-laws) are nice people but only her husband used to beat her up and had set her afire. Her husband had sold all the dowry articles which were given at the time of her marriage because of his drinking habit."
Four days after the attack, she succumbed to burn injuries.
Babu, however, had contended that he was not in his house at the time of the incident but the court refused to give credence to his arguments and convicted him.
"From the consistent deposition of witnesses, including dying declaration of the deceased, and totally unreliable stand taken in defence, I have no hesitation to conclude that prosecution has been able to prove its case beyond the reasonable doubt," the court said.

“Last night when I and my son were sleeping, my husband and in-laws doused us with kerosene and torched us,” Sunita reportedly said.
Lekh Raj, his father Ram Kumar and mother Ram Piari, residents of Popna village in Mohali, have been booked for murder, attempt to murder and other related charges, Sub-Inspector Gurbax Ram told Newsline. No arrests have been made.
Contrary to Sunita’s statement, however, some neighbourhood women told the police that all accused were away from home when the incident took place.
“We have recorded the statements of four neighbours. We will take appropriate action after a thorough investigation,” SI Gurbax Ram said.
