BARRON — A 23-year-old Rice Lake man charged with injuring his daughter last year when she was 14 weeks old entered into a one-year deferred prosecution agreement Friday in Barron County Court.

Paul J. Biver is charged with a felony count of child abuse that has a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.

According to court records:

Hospital officials in Rice Lake notified police on April 12, 2014, of a girl with suspicious head injuries. She eventually was taken to two Twin Cities area hospitals for treatment. Reports indicated the child had a subdural hematoma likely due to abusive head trauma, and an acute clavicle fracture, which indicated the child was a victim of shaken baby syndrome.

Biver, the girl’s father, told police the child fell off a couch the previous day, something that had happened before. Medical reports said the child would not have received such serious injuries from such a fall.
