DURHAM —
A Durham man accused of murdering his 3-month-old daughter appeared in court Wednesday and was denied bond.
Fredrick McLucas Jr., 34, is charged with killing Isabella, who died Jan. 31. An autopsy said the child died from blunt force trauma.
McLucas told Chief Durham County District Court Judge Marcia Morey that he is indigent. Morey said a public defender will be appointed to represent him.
Durham County District Attorney Roger Echols, who attended the hearing at the Durham County Detention Center, asked that bond be denied. Echols said he has not decided whether to seek the death penalty.
McLucas was arrested Tuesday on Crutchfield Street by members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force.
Officers were called to McLucas’s home on Gurley Street about 10:14 a.m. Jan. 31 and found the infant dead.
A probable-cause hearing for McLucas is set for March 2. He remains in the Durham County Jail.
