WISCONSIN RAPIDS — A 28-year-old Marshfield man authorities say broke a baby's arm in two places was sentenced in Wood County Circuit Court to 120 days in jail.

Mark D. Kuehn was given work release with his jail sentence and placed on three years probation for child abuse. During the sentencing Dec. 15, Wood County Circuit Judge Todd Wolf also ordered Kuehn to pay $654, undergo any counseling deemed necessary and have no contact with the victim. A charge of felony bail jumping was dismissed and read into the record.

According to the criminal complaint, on Sept. 6, a Wood County Human Services employee contacted the Marshfield Police Department regarding an injured baby. A 5-month-old boy was brought into Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital by his parents. The baby had two spiral fractures to his left arm.

A doctor told a Marshfield detective that the baby wasn't walking, crawling or pulling himself up yet, according to the complaint. The doctor believed the injuries had to be caused by someone else.

Kuehn, the baby's father, said he had been taking care of his son when the baby began to fuss in the crib. While Kuehn was changing the baby's diaper, the baby kept rolling from side to side. Kuehn said he became frustrated with the baby at one point and grabbed the baby's left arm and pulled it to direct the baby back onto his back, according to the complaint.

Kuehn said he heard a pop in the arm when he pulled it, and the baby began to cry, according to the complaint.

Kuehn was out on bond for the child abuse case when authorities learned he was having contact with the baby, according to court documents. The contact was in violation of Kuehn's bond conditions, and authorities filed a bail jumping charge against Kuehn.
