Dad charged with aggravated assault for twice burning face of 6-year-old son with clothing iron (Jersey City, New Jersey)

No mention of a mother in the home or elsewhere. Single dad?

Dad is identified as DANIEL BELL.

Notice that the headline is somewhat misleading in that it identifies him as a "man." This is pretty common in crime stories involving fathers.

A Bloomfield man has been charged with assaulting his 6-year-old son by allegedly twice burning the boy's face with a clothing iron in Jersey City, officials said today.

Daniel Bell, 38, of Bloomfield, made his first court appearance Tuesday on the charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse, in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City.

His bail was set at $50,000 cash or bond and he has since posted bail and been released from the Hudson County jail in Kearny. No could not be reached this afternoon.

On Nov. 26 the boy’s school contacted the state division of Child Protection and Permanency regarding the boy’s injuries and the CPP reached out to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Special Victims Unit, Hudson County Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debra Simon said today.

“The victim had been burned by his father on his face with an iron two times -- the iron made contact with his face two times,” said Simon of the charges, adding that the boy was treated for first- and second-degree burns.

Each of the charges filed against Bell is a second-degree offense, carrying a possible sentence of five to 10 years in prison, should he be convicted. #Bell surrendered at the SVU headquarters on Duncan Avenue in Jersey City Tuesday, Simon said. Bell could not be reached for comment.
