CROWN POINT | Lake County prosecutors recently filed murder charges against a Hammond man in the shooting death of his wife in their home March 29.

Victor Marquez, 38, is accused of killing his 37-year-old wife, Renata Garcia Marquez, in front of their 4-year-old son in their apartment in the 2000 block of Lincoln Avenue in Hammond.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the couple’s relationship had deteriorated over the last year, and they had a physical altercation the day before the shooting.

Renata Marquez was hired for a better job, lost weight and tried separating from her husband on several occasions during that year, the affidavit says.

Victor Marquez shot his wife twice in the chest in the bedroom of their apartment while their 4-year-old son was in the room, court records state. Renata Marquez’s mother, who lived in the downstairs apartment, told police she was awakened by an older Marquez child and went upstairs to find out what happened.

When Victor Marquez opened the apartment door, his mother-in-law saw Renata Marquez “laying on the bedroom floor in a puddle of blood and it appeared as though she was not breathing,” the affidavit says.

During an investigation by Hammond police, the 4-year-old told officers he saw his father shoot his mother, according to court records. Police also found a black 9mm high-point automatic handgun covered in what appeared to be blood in the apartment, court documents state.

Renata Marquez was pronounced dead at the scene. Victor Marquez was transported first to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond and then transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, court documents state.

He is currently being held without bond at the Illinois hospital.
