A Calgary man has pleaded guilty in the death of his baby son four years ago.

Jamie Allen Dorey was charged with manslaughter after his eight-week-old son Bryson Dorey-Fox died of a fractured skull in August 2009.

Dorey initially said he didn't do anything and blamed the child's injuries on a dog, as well as on how nurses handled the baby at the hospital.

But just as his trial got underway last week an informant came forward. At that time, prosecutors said new information would likely shorten the trial. On Monday, Dorey pleaded guilty.

A sentencing hearing is expected to be booked in January.

According to an agreed statement of facts released on Monday, Dorey was the only adult watching the baby in his northwest home on Aug. 1, 2009. Jamie Allen Dorey pleaded guilty on Monday to manslaughter in the 2009 death of his eight-week-old baby. (CBC)

"[The] skull fracture that ultimately caused the death of the victim was inflicted by him when the victim's head struck a sharp corner of an object in the residence," the lawyers wrote. "[Dorey] was fearful and remorseful after he saw the swelling on the victim's head and attempted to diminish the swelling by applying an ice pack."

The baby started having trouble breathing. About 10 to 15 minutes later, the baby's mother came home and took him to the hospital. Dorey went to the hospital in another vehicle, then did not return until the child's funeral on Aug. 8.

In an obituary in a local paper, baby Bryson was described as "Daddy's handsome little man" and the "light of everyone's eyes," including his parents and an older brother and sister.

"We love 'Our Sweet Boy' and he will always [be] in our hearts, till we see him again may his sweet face and smile live within our memories," said the obituary.
