A Chicago man armed with a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun took part in a drug deal in South Suburban Dolton with his 5-year-old daughter riding in the backseat of his car, according to the Cook County sheriff's office.
Armond Nelson, 32, was charged today with armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, child endangerment and narcotics possession, according to a press release from Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.
Nelson was spotted by investigators making a drug transaction with someone in another vehicle in south suburban Dolton, the release said.
The two vehicles were parked alongside each other when the drivers made a hand-to-hand transaction. One of the cars pulled off when investigators approached to make a traffic stop, the release said. All the while, his daughter was in the back seat of the car.
When investigators confronted Nelson, he refused to show his hands. Nelson tried to hide something in his left hand and had cash in his right hand. Investigators then saw Nelson placing an item in a door compartment, the release said.
There was a smell of cannabis and when investigators questioned Nelson about the odor he admitted to having a bag of cannabis in his pocket. He was asked to step out of the vehicle and investigators discovered a bag of crack cocaine and heroin in the door, the release said.
Another bag of heroin worth $510 was found in Nelson's pocket and $2,000 was found in the car. A loaded Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun which had been previously reported stolen was also found. Nelson told investigators he had purchased the weapon from someone on the street in Indiana, but it was later learned the gun was stolen in Gary in 2010, the release said.
Nelson's 5-year-old daughter was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle when investigators were conducting the traffic stop and was eventually turned over to relatives, the release said.
Nelson is scheduled to appear in Bond Court later today.
