Court hears of dad's sickening sex abuse

A convicted paedophile was trying to gain a perverted sense of "power and control" when he filmed himself indecently assaulting several children including his 11-year-old son, Wollongong District Court has heard.
The Sydney father, who cannot be named, was jailed yesterday for a minimum of seven years for the sickening abuse as Judge Paul Conlon noted the 40-year-old's own childhood molestation did not excuse his behaviour.
The man, who was placed on the child protection registry in 2003 for an unrelated assault, pleaded guilty to sexually abusing his son and two family friends, brothers aged 10 and seven, at a Greenwell Point caravan last year.
During a sleepover in January, the man showed one of the boys a DVD, depicting him simulating sexual intercourse with the child's brother and an unidentified young girl.
He told the terrified boy: "Your brother is going to make me a lot of money some day", the court was told.
Earlier in the evening, the man molested one of the boys, warning him: "No-one is going to know about this, right?"
He then showed the boy the DVD, which pictured him pulling the children's pants down while they were asleep and simulating sex acts.
On another occasion, the man ordered one of the boys to "hop in his bed", warning he would throw him out of the caravan if he didn't comply.
The man's son admitted to police he had been molested since he was about 8, recalling incidents when his drunk father would "act silly", removing the boy's clothes, "humping him" and telling him he would give him money. The man had warned him not to tell anyone.
The man's adult stepdaughter also came forward to police last year, admitting she had been molested when she was about 10.
She told police she and the man had been swimming when he told her something had "stung" his penis and asked her to inspect it.
Sentencing the man yesterday, Judge Conlon said the abuse was a gross breach of trust.
The court heard the man had been sexually abused by his kindergarten teacher and had been trying to gain a sense of power.
He admitted he had taken the boys' trust and used the molestation to gain control - "something I rarely had", he told a psychiatrist.
Judge Conlon said the man had shown genuine remorse for his actions and was keen to participate in sex offender programs.
He conceded the man's own childhood abuse did not excuse his behaviour but said it went some way to explaining it.
He was sentenced to an overall 9½ years' jail.
