A baby in Providence was injured 50 times in one week, and now her father is being charged with murder.

Christopher Jiminez said he didn't do anything on purpose, pleading not guilty in court, Wednesday, to beating his five week old daughter to death. She suffered from broken bones, skull fractures and brain swelling.

"Those injuries include at least four skull fractures, 27 rib fractures, clavicle and pelvis fractures, two arm fractures, six leg fractures, a liver laceration," said prosecutor Shannon Signore in court.

Signore said little Christina had a total of 50 injuries from repeated incidents over the first few weeks of her life. She was only alive eight weeks when her heart stopped. Her family told ABC6, in the past, it was all a mistake.

"It's very, very hard because we love the child," said grandfather Maures Gonzalez, "That's what we believe. It was an accident."

But doctors said with the extent of those injuries, that's tough to believe.

"They're common in the setting of motor vehicle crashes, real significant falls from heights, but no those are not injuries we see commonly when children are injured accidentally," said Hasbro Children's Hospital Physician Amy Goldberg.

Jiminez did give a statement back in June admitting to causing some of the infant's injuries, saying he placed her back in her crib barely breathing. Child abuse experts said cases like this aren't rare.

"Unfortunately it is more prevalent than some would think," said RI Kids Count Executive Director Elizabeth Burke Bryant, "These are just shocking, shocking cases and they defy one's comprehension of how children in this state and even across the country can be harmed and killed and even severely injured."

31–hundred children were abused in Rhode Island in 2011. Most of them were babies like Christina. As for Jiminez, the judge ordered him held without bail. The baby's mom also faces charges of cruelty and neglect.
