Vandergrift Father Ordered To Stand Trial In Baby’s Death
December 4, 2012 9:05 PM
VANDERGRIFT (KDKA) — A father from Vandergrift is headed to trial, accused in connection with his young daughter’s death.
In court on Tuesday, the judge heard from two witnesses, a doctor who described injuries to 2-month-old Sophia Ludwiczak, and a state trooper investigating the case.
It was enough for the judge to order 30-year-old Matthew Milisits to trial.
Milisits was silent as he walked into court. He is facing criminal homicide charges for the Nov. 15 death of his 2-month-old daughter.
Family members were wearing t-shirts in support of the baby, hoping her father is prosecuted. Her aunt spoke briefly.
“We just want justice for Sophia, and we’d like to say thank you to the community and everybody that has lent their support through this time,” she said.
According to police, Milisits was alone with the baby at his home for about three hours in mid-November. Police say Milisits originally told them he accidentally struck her head on a door.
Police say he later admitted to allegedly shaking the baby to get her to stop crying.
Attorneys representing Milisits will not comment on alleged statements admitting guilt, their focus, the death of the baby and the effect on all parties involved.
“Unfortunately, it’s a sad situation,” said Duke George, the defense attorney. “My client had a very good job; he comes from very good parents. He has a 6-year-old child that he wants to see. It’s just sad that this happened. It’s not good for anybody when something like this happens.”
Along with homicide, Milisits faces aggravated assault and multiple child endangerment charges.
The trial is expected to take place early next year.
