Killler Dads and Custody Lists

Dad murders 3-year-old son; given that mom had previously taken out restraining orders, why did dad have child access? (Greenville, North Carolina)

The very definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and hoping for different results. Why did a dad like CAREY ADAMS JR. have access to his young son? Was it court-ordered? Was Mom bullied into it? What?

Because it is clearly a disaster for guys like this to be around young children, especially when they have violent criminal records, a history of domestic violence, and a lot of "punish/control" issues when it comes to the mother of the children And we see over and over again that mothers and children are at particular risk when the mother finally leaves the abuser, as this mother had done.

And yet the freaking media frames this as a "domestic dispute" as if the problem were one of mutual antogonism (when there is NO evidence presented here that Mom was also engaging in tit-for-tat threats and acts of violence). We don't have a "domestic dispute" here. We have a father who was an intimate terrorist. The mother had filed for multiple restraining orders, and yet, somehow, dad still had some sort of access or visitation rights AT MINIMUM. Who allowed this? Let's have names.

Because this is insane. No child access for batterers and abusers. Period. It's the only way to stop the murders of these kids.

And yet we still have the bleating idiot brigade. "Happy family" blah blah blah. And we're just "shocked" blah blah blah. "Seemed like a good dad" blah blah blah. Why can't people ever admit that they just didn't know jacksh** about what was going on behind closed doors? And that appearances are meaningless?

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Family members say they're making funeral arrangements for Jesse Adams, the 3-year-old boy shot by his father.

Pitt County deputies say Jesse's father, 34-year-old Carey Adams Jr., shot the toddler and then turned the gun on himself just after 10 o'clock Friday night in Grifton.

Carey Adams underwent surgery at Vidant Medical Center Sunday and later died.

Deputies say the situation escalated from an ongoing domestic dispute with the boy's mother. They say Adams called her right before, and told her he was going to shoot his son. She called 9-1-1 but by the time deputies arrived, Adams had already fired the shots. Jesse died at Vidant Medical Center.

Neighbors 9 On Your Side talked with say they're shocked and saddened by what happened.

"Looks like a happy family. You know, I didn't see anything that would tell otherwise," said Trace Yarbrough, neighbor.

"I didn't sleep much knowing that a kid is involved like that, an innocent child. So, I can't fathom it to be right honest," said Ben Gaskins, neighbor.

Deputies say the investigation is ongoing.

No official date has been set for Jesse's funeral, but his mother says she wants to set up a fundraiser to help cover the funeral costs.

GRIFTON, N.C. – The father who shot and killed his 3-year-old son has died Sunday.

Deputies are investigating the shooting that happened at 1072 Wiley Gaskins Road in Grifton Friday just after 10 p.m.

First responders took 3-year-old Jesse Adams to Vidant Medical Center where he later died. His father, 34-year-old Carey Adams Jr., also known as C.J., turned the gun on himself after shooting his son.

Deputies tell us Carey Adams, Jr. underwent surgery to remove his organs and died Sunday.

9 On Your Side talked with neighbors who say they're shocked and upset by what happened.

Ben Gaskins says he couldn't believe it.

"It looked like New York City out here. It was fire trucks, police cars, people still coming and then all of a sudden you hear a helicopter."

"It’s just very sad what we've had to witness,” Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks says. “Several of our officers are very emotionally upset. I had to send two of them home tonight from what they saw."

Neighbors say they're shocked to hear Adams could be capable of killing his own son. They say from an outsider's perspective, he seemed like a good dad who could often be seen playing with his son in their front yard.

"They had bought him a little John Deere gator and he would be riding the gator behind his dad,” Gaskins says. “Just like any kid just playing and having a good time." "Looks like a happy family,” Trace Yarbrough, another neighbor, says. “You know, I didn't see anything that would tell otherwise."

But 9 On Your Side dug deeper and found Adams’ extensive criminal record, including assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, DWI, breaking and entering and communicating threats.

Sheriff Elks says Adams called the child's mother before the shooting. He says the separated couple had an ongoing domestic dispute and the mother has filed a restraining order against Adams.

But like so many others, Gaskins says he's still trying to make sense of what happened.

"I didn't sleep much knowing that a kid is involved like that, an innocent child,” he says. “So, I can't fathom it to be right honest."

Adams’ family members who live nearby declined to talk with us and we were unable to reach the child's mother.

We will continue to follow this investigation as it unfolds, so please check back for the latest information.
