SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies said they were called to an elementary school to investigate a possible child abuse case after officials said a student had severe bruises.
Spartanburg County deputies were called to New Prospect Elementary School on Friday where they said an 11-year-old student had bad bruises from the butt down the back of his legs to the knees.
According to an incident report, the child had reported to the school resource officer that he had got a "whippin," and the officer reported it to deputies.
Investigators said the child's father had used a belt to administer corporal punishment to him, but they said the punishment was excessive.
Timothy Wofford, 33, of Campobello, was charged with one count of child neglect and was being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Facility on a $1,000 bond.
The child was released to his mother's custody.
