Father charged with murder, child abuse of 1-year-old

The father a baby who died in 2010 has been charged with her murder and child abuse.

Ka'Mia C. Strawder, was 1-year-old when she died at Shands at the University of Florida on Nov. 19, 2010. Early Monday, Ka'Mia's father, Christopher Jarvis Strawder, 24, was arrested and charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, the child's fatal injury happened at the home where she lived with her parents in Arredondo Estates off Southwest Archer Road.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the home at about 6:40 a.m. for a medical emergency.

Christopher Strawder's initial statement to deputies was that while he was in the kitchen making breakfast, he put Ka'Mia on the counter, left the room and heard a loud thud. According to Strawder, when he returned to the kitchen, the baby was on the floor convulsing and he called 911 for help.

Ka'Mia was taken to Shands at the University of Florida where she was pronounced dead about 11 hours later of a traumatic brain injury, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Strawder was being held at the Alachua County jail on Monday. His bond was set at $1.2 million.
